They improved to a second place finish in 2010 thanks to the addition of Kenji Johjima, whic helped compensate for Kanemoto’s consecutive games streak finally ending due to knee problems, which consigned him to pinch hit duty most of the remainder of the schedule, as well as a career year from second baseman Keiichi Hirano and an NPB record hits total produced by foreign acquisition Matt Murton of 214. |

Notes: His one season with Orix was a disaster. Foreign players who couldn’t hit, a big foreign signing in Dan Serafini who lost his fastball and who couldn’t get anyone out, two big Japanese signings that bellyflopped in Norihiro Nakamura and perpetually injured Kazuhiro Kiyohara, and just awful fielding. All that and a manager who changed lineups and made substitutions seemingly on whim prevented the order form getting any traction. Seriously, their biggest hitter was Hirotoshi Kitagawa. ‘Nuff said. |

Notes: Did not manage 8/15-8/16/2002. The team’s last ever manager, he went on to become head coach under Hall of Fame skipper Akira Ogi with the Orix Buffaloes. He then succeeded Trey Hillman at Nippon Ham, promising to combine Hillman’s pitching philosophy with a brawnier offense. But that offense didn’t materialized, even with a career year from second baseman Kensuke Tanaka, as the Fighters finished last in team batting average, team OPS and runs scored and the top draft pick in Japan, Sho Nakata, didn’t make it out of the minors due to inconsistency on both sides of the ball as well as suspect defensive work before his season was then torpedoed by knee surgery. However, things improved at the plate markedly for the Fighters in 2009, as they topped the PL in team batting average and OPS on their way to the pennant, only to lose in the Japan Series to Yomiuri. Then Nashida’s nine got involved in a real dogfight for the 2010 PL pennant, as the team finished only 2.5 games out of the top spot, but that still meant a fourth place finish even with a league leading ERAthat was spearhed by yet another stellar season from young righty Yu Darvish, who decided to not take the posting system to MLB due to impending divorce proceedings with his wife Saeko. So he’l be back in 2011, which will almost assuredly be his last in NPB. |

Notes: Nishimura was charged with succeeding the very popular Bobby Valentine and fans rebelled when it was announced that 2009 was the former Texas and NY Mets skipper’s last in Chiba. Fortunately for him, he not only came within 2.5 games of taking the Marines from fifth to first, but then guided the Marines through the playoffs and lead them to besting Chunichi in seven games in the Japan Series to become the first club ever to use a third place finish to qualify for the playoffs and then win the Japanese championship. Looming for Nishimura, though, is the loss of closer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who had a career year, to MLB, leaving their 2011 prospects very much questionable. |

Notes: Won three Japan Series titles (1993, 1995, 1997). Lost seven straight Opening Days through the beginning of 2008 before halting it inj 2009 and he is 8-15-1 on that occasion as a manager. Nomura, at leats, has turned this into merely a mediocre team rather than the woeful losers they were in 2005, but they just don’t have the talent to contend yet. For all of his faults (mainly that he is a whining, grumbling relic), Nomura has actually done a fairly admirable job and actualy lead them to their best finish of their short history in 2009, but team management decided that Nomura was a little long in the tooth and nudged him out to an honorary position with the club, resulting in a lot of acrimony. Their record in Nomura’s final campaign also prevented him from becoming the only manager who had skippered more than 2000 games who had a losing record. |

Notes: The veterean pitching coach was given the reigns of a pathetic team and when the pitching staff got blowed up real good for free AGAIN they were out of it before the fourth of July. Obana’s job was only saved thanks to a farcical buyout attempt by a real estate firm that was torpedoed when they wouldn’t promise to keep the ballclub in Yokohama, considering moving it to Niigata, oF all places. Free agent third baseman Shuichi Murata decided to stay for God only knows what reason even after all that. Boy, has TBS made a mess of this organization. |

Notes: Won the 2003 pennant, but got beat in the Japan Series by Seibu. He then attempted to inject more youth in his bullpen, but that brought only less than satisfactory results while veteran closer Hitoki Iwase still managed to set a new NPB record for saves in a season with 46. But even the added slugging power of Tyrone Woods and a career year from shortstop Hirokazu Ibata couldn’t make up for Alex Ochoa’s lack of production and the deterioration of catcher Motonobu Tanishige’s performance and it would Hanshin that was doing all the timely hitting this time around. In 2006, both Kosuke Fukudome and Tyrone Woods had MVP years and they built up a nine game lead, but then almost blew it to Hanshin, ultimately taking it by three games. Fukudome, though, would sit out a good chunk of 2007 with an injury, but Ochiai nonetheless guided the Dragons to their first Japan Series title in half a century. Fukudome then departed the scene via free agency, but they lucked out when Iwase decided to gorego free agency despite a huge MLB payday awaiting him. Unfortunately, the starting pitching was largely indifferent even with a surprising effort ftom aging lefty Masahiro Yamamoto and Chunichi found themselves way behind the eight ball in the standings. Now with Chunichi casting Woods off, they replaced him with Tony Blanco, who had a great debut campaign, but even with a career year from journeyman Masahiko Morino, they were just outclassed and finished 12 games behind Yomiuri. In 2010, Ochiai did a lot of lineup juggling, but also was able to count on leftfielder Kazuhiro Wada, who had an MVP type season, to return to the Japan Series, where they lost in seven to Lotte. |

Biography: Took over for fired manager Shigeru Takada 5/27/2010 and the Swallows took off after he shook their lineup up, finishing only 6.5 games out of the one slot in the CL. It also helped that ace Masanori Ishikawa, following a disastrous beginning to his season, righted himself and was nearly flawless the rest of the way. They definitely have the potential to contend in 2011. |

Biography: Arguably the man who made both Hideo Nomo’s and Ichiro Suzuki’s careers possible. Won one Japan Series title (1996). Was rehired in the desperate hope that he could take the team to another level, but that hope proved to be in vain. Ogi’s health caused him to resign and the team’s Gneral Manager assumed the field boss duties beginning in 2006. |

Notes: Won Japan Series titles in 1999 and 2003. Also won pennants in 2004-2005, but was beaten by Seibu in the first instance and Lotte in the second to spend the Japan Series in front of the tv set both years. Had stomach cancer surgery in July, 2006 and missed the rest of the season. He returned in spring training with his health improving and his offense bolstered by Hitoshi Tamura, but what appeared to be the best starting rotation in Japanese baseball history, Kazumi Saito, Nagisa Arakaki, Toshiya Sugiuchi, Tsuyoshi Wada and Rick Guttormson, was either injured or just didn’t deliver the kind of performance they were capable of and marquee slugger Nobuhiko Matsunaka’s pwer numbers went off the edge of a cliff. Thus the club floundered at the end of a close pennant race to finish third. Oh then announced that 2008 will be his last season as the Hawks skipper. And the Hawks proceded to go right into the tank, as they had no offense and Kazumi Saito spent the entire schedule on the shelf after shoulder surgery while fireballing righty Nagisa Arakaki was throwing the baseball all over the lot to set a new NPB wild pitch record. So Oh ends his long and distinguised baseball career in the cellar while his health is beginning to appear dicey again. He deserved better. Is 12-6-1 on Opening Day managerial stints, theo fourth best such mark all time. |

Notes: Took over on May 22nd for departed manager Terry Collins. He had been Collins’ bench coach before being named on an interim basis. Notes: Okada, hampered by a season ending elbow injury to setup man Jerrod Riggan and his charges not hitting well with runners in scoring position in 2004, juggled his lineup and retooled the rotation as well, leading to the combination of third baseman Makoto Imaoka and leftfielder Tomoaki Kanemoto becoming the most lethal 1-2 RBI punch in NPB and the game pretty much being over when the combination of Kyuji Fujikawa/Jeff Williams and Tomoyuki Kubota relieved a pretty solid starting corps. However, after cruising to a pennant, they were absolutely dismantled in record fashion by the upstart Chiba Lotte Marines in the Japan Series, the pressure of championship play seeming to get to Kanemoto particularly. In 2006, they forgot how to hit with runners in scoring position, with 2005 RBI champion Makoto Imaoka becoming a double play machine before going down with a hand injury and there began to be cries for Okada’s head. But they finished by playing .800 ball in September and October and made it tight. The difference? They couldn’t beat Chunichi at Nagoya Dome. In 2007, their offense went south and none of their starters could consistently get past the fifth, putting a terrible strain on the bullpen, and they faded badly down the stretch. Unfortunately, after surging almost 14 game into the front of the rest of the CL pack, the Tigers rolled over and played dead and not only lost the pennent in the worst collapse in NPB history, but then got blown out in the playoffs. The humiliated Okada subsequently quit and was eventually named to spearhead Japan’s WBC effort in 2009. Japan seized their second straight WBC title and Okada was named the Buffaloes manager, leading to improvement in their pitching but the offense just wasn’t consistent enough and they sunk to fifth, though only seven games out of the number one position. However, this may be the best this club can do and they could very well regress in 2011. |

Notes: While Oya didn’t win any pennants in his original stint with the Bay Stars, he was given credit for developing the talent that lead to them winning a Japan Series title under Hiroshi Gondo. He was brought back in 2007 and they were in the pennant mix for a while, but a weak bullpen and an offense that was Shuichi Murata and little else killed their chances down the stretch. But Bay Stars management then decided to allow closer Mark Kroon to get away to Yomiuri and their inability to catch the ball had them out of it by June 1st. Warhorse Takanori Suzuki was released and became a coach while longtime shortstop Takuro Ishii was also cut loose and sigtned with Hiroshima in the club’s continuing bid to get younger, cheaper and hopefully better. That bid bore no fruit at all and Oya was fired on May 18, 2009. |

Biography: Became Nippon Ham’s general manager, bringing in Trey Hillman, who lead them to two Japan Series berths, winning it all in 2006. Decided to step down with the Fighters after the 2007 season and was asked to succeed Atsuya Furuta at Yakult. However, Swallows management didn’t want to give outfielder Alex Ramirez a raise after Ramirez set a new CL hits record, and the birds dropped like a box of rocks in the standings while Ramirez was picking up the league MVP over at Yomiuri. The one bright spot was that top draft pick Yoshinori Sato, who had rejected several major league offers, showed definite signs that he was actually going to fulfill his potential as a Japanese version of Roy Oswalt. The pen, though, is very questionable and, aside from Sato, centerfielder Norichika Aoki and secondbaseman Hiroyasu Tanaka, this team has such suspect talent that it provokes one to believe that they another second division finish in store for it and Takada to be shown the door at the end of the year. |

Notes: Yet more proof that leftovers can produce unappetizing results, Tao found that he had now pitching and little firepowe and the Golden Eagles were dead ducks by May. It didn’t help that Hiroshi Mikitani, the team’s owner, decided that he wanted to be Japan’s equivalent of Jerry Jones and decided to overrule good baseball sense by canning or demoting everybody in site when the dust cleared and then hired relic of the past Katsuya Nomura, whose stint at Hanshin was a bad joke, was brought in to try to right the ship. Don’t expect the team’s fortunes to change anytime soon unless Mikitani gets a clue. |

Notes: Japan’s closest analog to Branch Rickey, though unlike Rickey, a mediocre catcher, Tsuruoka was a great third baseman. Nevertheless, he pioneered the use of a team owned minor league club in Japan to help develop players and personally scouted a poor kid who became his greatest player, catcher Katsuya Nomura. His impact was such that he was dubbed “The Godfather (oyabun)” by his players. He is Japan’s all time winningest skipper. Famous quotation: “There’s money to be made on this field.” Had health problems in 1962 and was absent from 5/23, when the team was in sixth, to 8/8. when they had elevated themselves to third. Won Japan Series titles in 1959 and 1964. Was 21-2 while managing on Opening Days, the best such record of all time. |

Totals | 292 | 127 | 154 | 11 | .435 |
Biography: Ushijima, a former pitcher, was able to resucitate the careers of Ken Kadokura and Yoshihiro Doi and, as Kazuhiro Sasaki’s swan song concluded rather pathetically, brought in Mark Kroon and his 100mph heat to close and made the team respectable once more, even with centerfielder Hitoshi Tamura being out most of the first half of the year after a traffic accident. Unfortunately, though, in 2006, the clock struck 12 on both Doi and Kadokura, who stunk it up, they couldn’t field and their pen was batting practice, making then last in the league in ERA. Hitoshi Tamura was gone most of the season with a couple of major injuries and only Shuichi Murata hit with any authority. They earned their last place finish. Ushijima, tired of internecine battles with the front office, especially pertaining to acquiring foreign players, then quit. |

Notes: Actually finished second in 2005, but beat Softbank in the playoffs and then crushed Hanshin in four straight for Lotte’s first championship in more than three decades, thus making “Bobby Magic” one of the bigger buzz phrases of the year. Valentine was then rewarded with one of trhe richest managerial contracts on either side of the Pacific and is now a golden god in Chiba. But in 2006, his starters who were part of Japan’s WBC team all came out of the blocks slowly. They seemed to get on track during interleague play, but poor power production really made them a paper tiger and injuries exacerbated things, especialy the ones to Kazuya Fukuura and Benny Agbayani. So it turned into a developmental year, where Valentine was able to give a lot of kids a fair amount of playing time, but it also became Valentine’s first losing season in Chiba. They must get some pop and firm up an aging and thin bullpen to prevent a repeat. And Valentine did just that in 2007, acquring Julio Zuleta, who was okay but still better than what they had been getting in the DH role in 2006, and developing Yusuke Kawasaki and Tadahiro Ogino to help overcome a horrible year by starter Naoyuki Shimizu, who they began shopping around at the end of the season. Lotte and Nippon Ham tied their season series, but the Fighters prevailed in the PL playoff final that went to five games.. Then, thanks to a bad 2008 from righthander Hiroyuki Kobayashi, an up and down year from Ogino in his initial foray into closing, the Marines sank into last and rumors began flying about Valentine being given the boot. However, they stuck with him and the club rallied to finish in fourth. Valentine, who is still widly popular, was given one more year, but it was announced that 2009 will indeed be his last in Chiba. So even with the club languising in last place for a while, that announcement set off a huge fan backlash against the Marines front office that ran through the end of the season. Valentine returned to the U.S. and was hired by ESPN as a commentator. |

Notes: Won one Japan Series championship (2001). His contract wasn’t renewed even though he did a commendable job with clubs that lost frontline players (Atsnori Inaba, Kazuhisa Ishii, Shingo Takatsu) or was frequently riddled by injuries to its pitching staff. But future hall of fame catcher Atsuya Furuta was determined to be more popular and so he was given the job for 2006. This is yet another symptom of how badly run Japanese teams are by their clueless owners. |

Totals | 288 | 146 | 134 | 8 | .521 |
Biography: Bringing in a freer atmosphere and more free swinging hitting philosophy, Watanabe took the Lions to a Japan Series title his first year at the helm. Unfortunately, despite leading the PL in slugging and homers, they just didn’t get enough men on base and the pitching regressed to make contention impossible in 2009. In 2010, onetime ace Fumiya Nishiguchi showed that he is done and that was exacerbated by a suspect pen that put the Lions last in the circuit in team ERA.If that wasn’t bad enough, slugger Takeya Nakamura spent a big chunk of the schedule on the disabled list, probably costing the club the pennant. However, Watanabe’s nine should be the early pick to snap up the flag in 2011 since their talent level will outclass any other team in the league. |
