Biography: Parents were from Hiroshima. Played with Hawaii Asahi before coming to Japan in 1928 as a member of a California Nikkei team that was based in Stockton, Yamato,. Had double citizenship, but renounced the Japanese part of that in 1928. Was originally a catcher, but became a pitcher at the suggestion of Kaiser Tanaka. Helped Hosei University to three Tokyo Big Six University League titles. Won a total of 43 games against 28 losses in 87 appearances, the firsdt man ever in that league’s history to break the 40 barrier. However, he hurt his shoulder ands elbow his junior year and switched to a sidearm delivery for a while to take some of the stress off of it. Also got married while still in school. Got a then unheard of 10,000 yen (about $5000 U.S at the time) signing bonus due to a bidding war between Osaka and Hankyu. Signed with Osaka on Janurary 9, 1936. His nickname is thought to be from a Spanish word that means a guy who has a peach fuzz mustache. Repetoire was reportedly a fastball overhand curveball, slider, knuckle ball, shuuto and sinker. Hurt his shoulder in 1937 and treated it with frequent outings to hot springs. Was out nine months before he could pitch again. When the Japanese government ordered a purge of foreign players in 1941, he took Japanese citizenship and renounced his American citizenship. Threw in 14 straight games in 1944. At the end of the war, became president of a seafood company owned by his wife’s family and initially refused to get back into baseball, but was evntually talked into it over the objection s of his wife. Threw a 12 inning complete game in game one of the 1950 Japan Series.. Had 31 walkless complete games. Coached with Tombo and Nishitetsu after retirement.Went back into the business world after leaving baseball. His third son Tadaharu was a president of the pharmaceutical firm Smith, Kline, Beecham. 100th Win (3/28/1942 against Nagoya at Nishinomiya Stadium, the second in history to that mark). 200th Win (11/3/1947 against Chunichi at Korakuen Stadium, the second in history to that mark). Is only one of two players to have won MVPs both before and after WWII. Died of complications from surgery for an intestinal ulcer or stomach cancer, depnding on which ever story is accurate. Biography: Represented Australia at both the Atlanta and Athens olympic games. Once beaned Ichiro (2001). Had knee surgery during the 2005 offseason, but then had to have another procedure done in March, 2006, necessitating that he rejoin the Tigers in mid-season. Has become something of a coach without portfolio with the Tigers such is the respect he has garnered. Didn’t allow a run for three months during the 2007 season. Was accused of using setroids by the George Mitchell Report during the 2007 offseason. He has denied the allegations. Injured his shoulder in June 2009 and eventually had surgery on it. Unfortunately, the shoulder didn’t come back and he retired after the 2010 season to become a scout for Hanshin. Reference: Wikipedia Japan Official Homepage |

Biography: Was signed for around a total of $2.5 million. Was reputed to being able to hit 98mph on the radar gun, but didn’t show anywhere near that during his time with the Tigers. Had a lot of trouble finishing hitters off early in the count and his sweat was almost tidal in nature, which causes one to wonder if he was on Ephedrine. He was well liked personally by his teammates, coaches and the press, but two beaning incidents following balk calls put him in the doghouse by embarrassing the club and he was sent to the minors in August for the second such incident never to return. He also took a liner from Alex Ramirez off of his face in a game, which took nine stricthes to close (4/24/2007 against Yakult). Set an NPB balk record with 12 (2007). |

Biography: Older brother of Yang Chung-shou. Was a bigtime high school player in his native country and there was some anger when he decided to play in Japan, but that was eased by his signing with the team then managed by Chinese hero Sadaharu Oh. Played in some international tournaments for Taiwan as well as an outfielder. Hurt his shoulder in 2005, which resulted in him cutting back his pitching side for a while, but that healed. Drafted on the first round (2005). Had some injury problems in 2007 and didn’t play. Didn’t get a single otu in his only pro start. Reference: Wikipedia Japan |
