Biography: After being part of a World Series champion in 2004, Kapler went to Japan to prove that he could be an everyday player. But following a failry solid spring, he had trouble making good contact on the steady diet of breaking balls down and away that he saw from Japanese hurlers from Opening Day onward. He then injured his back and was demoted to the minors. Hating his season to that point, he told the press that going to NPB was a mistake. He subsequently agreed to forego the remainder of his Giants contract in July in order to return to the Red Sox, who put him on the disabled list to allow Kapler to rehab the back. He then ruptured his Achilles tendon late in the season. |

Biography: Suffered a string of injuries in 2005, including a severe hamstring pull shortly after Opening Day. Nevertheless, his release was something of a suprise considering what he did for them offensively. But Hiroshima didn’t want to pay him what he was worth and so he went to Yakult. Was released by Yakult after an injury informed season and picked up by Orix. His 28 HBP in 2007 is a pro yakyu record. 100th homer (8/28/2007 against Softbank at Kobe Green Stadium in the fourth inning off of Tsuyoshi Wada, a solo jack to left). Had reconstructive right elbow surgery in May, 2008 and missed the rest of the season, undergoing Tommy John surgery to fix it. Was hit on the righthand by a pitch from Softbank reliever Masahiko Morifuku at the end of July, 2009 and missed the rest of the season with a fracture. It was also his 100th Japanese career HBP, 13th moust all time. Broke his pinky finger in April, 2010 and played with it after having a plate inserted in it. However, he came down with a back problem in May and that would effectively be it for his season and his career in Japan. Also scouted while he plays in Japan. 100th homer (8/28/2007 against Softbank at Kobe Green Stadium in the fourth inning off of Tsuyoshi Wada, a solo jack to left). Biography: His nickname was after a horse in the Three Kingdoms Tales. Named Rookie of the Year in 1997 as a member of the KBO’s LG Twins and lead that circuit in hits four times (1999-2001, 2005), Hurt his left knee in 2003, causing him to change his approach from being a power hitter to more of a contact guy, winning a batting title in 2005. Also played on Korea’s WBC contingent in 2006. Became a free agent during the 2006 offseason and was signed by Chunichi. However, he hasn’t really hit and his seeming disregard for hustling in the outfield has lead to a lot of grumbling by fans and the media. In fact, he had zero asists in 2007, a rare feat for an outfielder qualifying for the batting title, though a pretty strong posteseaosn performance compensated for thgat somewhat. Unfortunately, he stunk it up in 2008, including in the postseaon, and was not only left off the Korean olympic team, but also its WBC nine. He then lost his starting job when the 2009 campaign opened. Reference: Wikipedia Japan |

Biography: Was considered the Korean Ichiro and was a two time Korea Series MVP before signing with Chunichi, a transaction that cost the Dragons 450 million yen for Lee’s contract. However, his Japanese career was marred by injury, especially by a pitch that hit him and caused a fracture in the first half of 1998, causing him to miss the second half of the schedule. Went back to the KBO in May, 2001 and is now with the Kia Tigers. |

Biography: Warren Cromartie called him “Godfather.” Was invited to Japan by Jim Lefebvre, who was a Lotte coach at the time. His 11 straight games with an RBI was a new Pacific League record. Was blamed by Lotte manager Masaichi Kaneda for not winning the pennant because he didn’t win the Triple Crown. Boy, that’s an interesting leap in logic. Selected to four all star teams (1977, 1979-1981). His .320 lifetime average was the highest in history for any player with 4000 or more at bats until it was exceeded by Hiromitsu Ochiai in 1989. Had an 11 game RBI streak, a Pacific League record (5/7-5/19/1977). Was all time homer and hits leader among foreign players until those were eclipsed by Tuffy Rhodes in 2003 and 2008 respectively. |

Biography: One story has it that he intentionally flunked the entrance exam to Hanyang University so that his father would allow him to play pro ball. Was a pitcher coming out of High School, but hurt his elbow shortly after joining Samsung and was converted into a first baseman. Batted .305 with 324 homers and 948 RBIs during his KBO career. Tried to find a job in MLB, but was offered only minor league contracts and so chose to go with Lotte. Belted 54 homers in 1999 to set a new Korean record. The Asian home run record holder with 56 in 2003, breaking Sadaharu Oh’s mark of 55. His number 36 is retired in Korea and he is only one of three players to eclipse the 300 homer barrier there and carted off five MVP awards and an equal number of homer crowns. Had a tough time his first year against much better pitching than what he was used to in Korea and was often platooned and even had a spell in the Japanese minors. Along with Benny Agbayani and Matt Franco, was part of the first trio ever for foreign players in Japanese history to go back to back to back in an inning (9/21/2004 against Seibu at Seibu Dome off of Chiang Chia-chiah). Learned to play left before the 2005 campaign and as the season wore on he began to get more locked in, though he had trouble against lefthanders. Connected for three homers in the Japan Series in 2005 to help the Marines sweep Hanshin. Pounded five homers, including one off of Dontrelle Willis, in ther WBC (2006). Also had a game winning two run clout against Japan off of Hirotoshi Ishii. His deal was up after the 2005 campaign and he was signed by Yomiuri. Started off hot in 2006 and opened a big lead in the homer race, but he began having trouble with a knee and even though he hit southpaws well, he lost the homer title. He was going to take another shot at the majors and there was interest from a few teams, including Pittsburgh, but his doubts about what MLB scouts might think about his knee problem caused him to remain in Japan with a huge pay boost. Not much with the glove, though. Owned Daisuke Matsuzaka and Kei Igawa. Hit 8,000th Giants homer since the split into two leagues (5/5/2007 against Yakult at Tokyo Dome in the fourth inning off of Kosuke Matsui, a two run blast to leftcenter). Signed with Orix as a free agent. 100th homer (7/1/2007 against Hiroshima at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium off of Takahiro Aoki in the second inning, a two run blast to right, in his 432nd game). Three homer game (9/7/2007 against Hanshin at Tokyo Dome). Selected to two all star teams (2005-2006). Reference: Wikipedia Japan |

Biography: Started playing baseball in fifth grade. Saw the Koshien Tournament on tv as a youngster and decided he wanted to play in it, so he came to Japan after junior high. Slugged either 47 or 53 homers in high school, depending on who you want to believe. Couldn’t play his senior year, though, due to age restrictions. His father also died from an illness whle he was in high school. Was his team’s cleanup hitter in college, winning a batting title (spring 1999) and garnering two Best Nine nominations. Finished with five homers and a .282 average for his university career. Drafted on the seventh round (2002). Has very good batspeed, but has had trouble with breaking pitches and pitch recognition, though he experienced a big improvement in 2007. Didn’t play at all in 2003 due to a knee injury. Used mostly as a pinch hitter his first three years. Played at Athens for Taiwan in 2004 and for his country’s WBC squad in 2006. Suffered a shoulder injury in 2007 and his career could be on the line because of it. Reference: Wikipedia Japan |

Biography: Played in a U.S. independent league in 1999. Rejoined Hiroshima in May, 2000. Got into a shoving match with Carp rightfielder Tomonori Maeda during the 2002 season over Maeda running gingerly on his bad wheels that, in the past, he had Achilles tendon surgery on. Lopez was suspended, fined, and sent down to the minors. He then went into an offensive tailspin when he was called back up and was releasred at the end of the season. He apologized to Maeda and the rest of the team for the incident. This was an interesting mix of characters: the normally mild-mannered Lopez vs. the stonefaced, not much liked by his teammates but talented as all get out frequently injured Maeda. Scouted after retirement before becoming a minor league batting instructor for Rakuten in 2009. |
