Biography: Youngest of three brothers born to parents who had originally come from Kumamoto Prefecture to work on rail construction in Utah. Satoshi was born in Hawaii. They then worked in grapefruit fields in Fresno. Satoshi started playing baseball in elementary school. Teams of Japanese-Americans had even travelled to Japan to play. The Hirayamas were confined at the Poston internment camp in Arizona during WWII. They formed baseball teams at the camp and played teams from other internment centers. They returned to Fresno when the war ended and Satoshi played both baseball and football in high school and he was given an athletic scholarship to Fresno State., where he played fullback despite only being about 5’3″ on the football squad and broke five teeth. He became captain of the baseball team as a junior and won a state batting title. He set a team record with five steals in a single game and was named to university all star teams. He joined the Fresno Athletics, a local Nisei club and was its cleanup hitter, winning a national nisei league title (1950). He was signed by the St. Louis Browns, who sent him to Stockton in the California League, being given a $300 a month salary. A year later, he went into the army and served for two years. Wally Yonamine got him in contact with the Hiroshima Carp. Shortly after marrying, he arrived in Hiroshima, with 100,000 people welcoming him with a parade huh? (3/11/1955). Hirayama became the fourth Japanese-American to play for the Carp in team history. He didn’t speak any Japanese at all initially, picking it up from his teammates. He had a two homer, six RBI day against Chunichi early into his first season and garnered admiration for his arm, his speed and his all out style of play (4/12/1955). He was selected to two all star teams (1956, 1958) and ended up being a coach with Hiroshima after he hung it up (1965). He did a face plant into the fence at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in a game against Hanshin and while he needed only five stitches in his forehead to stem the bleeding, it affected his vision and that ultimately shortened his career (10/13/1961). into the He returned to Fresno and worked for the local school district in the human resources department. He then scouted for both the California Angels and, later, Hiroshima, where he hlped the Carp land Gail Hopkings, Jim Lyttle, Tim Ireland and others. He still does occasional work for Hiroshima ta their academy in the Dominican Republic. Selected to two all star teams (1956, 1958). |

Biography: His middle name is after the doctor that helped his mother give birth to Gail. Was going to go to medical school, but Joe Lutz lured him to Japan. Cracked critical three run homer to right to help clinch Carp’s first ever pennant (10/15/1975 against Yomiuri at Korakuen Stadium in the ninth inning off of Kazumi Takahashi on a 3-2 pitch). Played in one Japan Series and batted .333 (8-24 with two doubles, four walks, one HBP and four strikeouts) with one homer and two RBIs in six games (1975). Selected to one all star team (1976). He has since become a doctor. Also has a Phd. in Biology. |

Biography: Joined Yakult on April 27, 1987 after signing for a $2 million salary. Slugged six homers in his first four games in Japan, three of those in one game (5/6/1987 against Hanshin, all of of Chikafusa Ikeda; the first was on a slider down in the zone that exited to left, the second on a fastball up and in that was gone to leftcenter and the third on a hanging curve that he roped over the centerfield wall). Sprained his back trying to stop his swing and it hampered him the rest of the way (7/11/1987 against Yomiuri while facing Yuji Mizuno on a curve ball on the inner half of the plate). He also was in a Suntory Beer commercial and was said to have pulled in more than 600 million yen during his one year in Japan, a fantastic sum at the time. Was signed by St. Louis after leaving the Swallows. |

Biography: Changed his swing during the 1997 offseason to reduce the degree of uppercut he had and his numbers nosedived in 1998. One report said that he didn’t know the proper way to grip a baseball to make a throw from the outfield, using all five of his fingers rather than the more conventional three (thumb, index and middle) before coming to Japan. That is really hard to believe, but there it is. Selected to one all star team (1997). |

Biography Replaced Jim Lyttle on the roster and while he didn’t approach Lyttle’s offensive numbers, fans appreciated Ireland for his defense and aggressive hustle. However, he also fractured the pinky finger on his left hand sliding into first. Played and coached in Taiwan and also scouted for Kansas City after leaving Japan. |

Biography: Arrived in Japan at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on April 20, 1975. Was saddled with the unenviable task of replacing the just retired Mr. Giants, Shigeo Nagashima, at third base after playing almost all of his MLB career playing second. Of course, he didn’t do himself any favors in alleviating those expectations when he told the press his goal was to hit 50 homers that season. During his second season, returned to the states for a bit to have an injured wrist treated and then came back with a vengeance, slugging 18 homers in a two month period. Was picked up by Philadelphia and then the Cubs after leaving Japan before retiring and becoming a successful manager. |
