| Notes: That they did as well as they did in 2005 was a miracle because they had two legitimate start457ers and a problematic pen further hindered by suspect defense at the corners of the infield. But Brown got Katsuhiro Nagakawa back on track and made him finally fulfill his potential, tajght Hiroki Kuroda how to economize on his pitches and babied atging Shinji Sasaoka through the season successfully. Eishin Soyogi emerged as a fine addition to the infield and Tomonori Maeda just keeps on hitting, so they garbbed semi-respectability again after a last place showing in 2005. In 2007, though, Sean Douglass sat out the campaign after surgery and the middle relief corps deteriorated while the starting rotation was young and inconsistent while veteran Shinji Sasaoka showed his age and would announce his retirement. Things looked to only get worse, as slugger Takahiro Arai and ace Hiroki Kuroda split via free agency because they were tired of losing and the Carp won't spend the money necessary to obtain elite high school and college prospects nor acquire free agents. Somehow, though, Hiroshima to not be worse than a terrible Yokohama club and a surprisingly horried Yakult nine and so they had their best finish since 2001. The original plan had been to use Brown to rebuild the Carp through 2008 and then replace him with Kenjiro Nomura when they move into their new ballpark in 2009, but the Carp leadership decided to bring Brown back. Brown also married a Japanese woman, but their initial campaign in the new digs was a tough one because they were still thin in overall talent, especially in the pen, and lacked consistent outfield sock. The fish then went with Nomura for 2010, so Rakuten picked Brown up, but were disappointed with how the team fared even with a career year out of catcher Motohiro Shima, who contended for a batting title for a while and nabbed his team's first ever Gold Glove, and so Brown was let go, probably prematurely, and former Chunichi and Hanshin skipper Senichi Hoshino drafted in to replace him. |

However, his ace, Hidetaka Kawagoe, sucked and Lance Carter was a failure as their closer and they were behind the eight ball early. Collins complained during the season that his players weren't executing what they had been taught and he reportedly contemplated quitting after what he termed, "the longest season of my life." However, he did have some success bringing along Mamoru Kishida and Chihiro Kaneko for the starting rotation and rookie shortstop Keiji Obiki had his moments. However, despite the addition of Alex Cabrera via free agency, his club feel into fifth during the 2008 season and he resigned on May 21st, saying that he had lost the passion to run the team any longer. |

| Totals | 290 | 130 | 157 | 3 | .453 |
| Notes: At Furuta's behest, closer Hirotoshi Ishii and third baseman Akinori Iwakumra were prevented from being posted. The irony is that Furuta just recently resigned his post as the head of the Japanese players' union and had made proposals to attempt to create more player movement. Furuta also had no compunction about helping to throw his former boss, Tsutomu Wakamatsu, under the bus to take over the managerial reigns of the Swallows. The change was due to Furuta's popularity, but how many people come to the park to see a guy make pitching changes and fill out lineup cards? Uh, they don't. Dumb, dumb, dumb. So in 2006, they lost closer Hirotoshi Ishii to a shoulder problem and second baseman Greg LaRocca also missed substantial time and was released. Furuta himself had a shoulder problem and played in less than 30 games. He also barely showed up as a player in 2007 while the Swallows, despite great years from Norichika Aoki, Alex Ramirez and new addition Seth Greisinger, went into the tank because they couldn't find a steady replacement for Akinori Iwamura at third and the starters that followed Greisinger just flat out stunk while nobody stepped up in the closer's role, longtime staple Shingo Takatsu eventually being released. Furuta, bummed at his team's showing, retired as a player and stepped down as manager with talk swirling that he was headed into politics. |

| Notes: Took Yomiuri to a four game Japan Series sweep of the Seibu Lions (2002). Resigned following the 2003 season due to meddling by Giants owner Tsuneo Watanabe in Hara's coaching staff, touching off a controversy that was a public relations disaster fot the team. So after Tsuneo Horiuchi didn't get the job done, Watanabe rehired Hara. The Giants came out of the shoot like a house on fire, but then injuries and interleague play put them on a steep downward slide and by mkid-August it was over but the shouting for them. With a move of ace Koji Uehara to the closer's role and the addition of Michihiro Ogasawara, he then expertly lead them to the CL flag in 2007 in a very close finish, but lost in the playoffs to eventual Japan champion Chunichi. But after falling 13.5 games behind in 2008, Hanshin stopped hitting and the Giants snuck into the top spot in the CL, only to lose to Seibu in the Japan Series. The Giants then, thanks to a career year from pitcher Dicky Gonzalez and an MVP campaign from leftfielder Alex Ramirez, cakewalked to the CL flag in 2009 and then took the Japan Series. |

| Notes: Was Texas' farm director before being hired at Nippon Ham. Like Texas, this is a team that can hit some but possesses little viable pitching. Well, at least until 2006. Taking the Sparky Anderson approach to handling pitchers (give them the hook at the first sign of trouble) and got lucky with journeyman players such as Kensuke Tanaka and Hichori Morimoto, who had career years. He also developed Yu Darvish and Tomoya Yagi, the club overcame a weak offense (though Fernando Seguignol finished strong the last two months) to win it by a whisker on the last day of the season and then got to the Japan Series for the first time in 25 years. Their 82 wins was a Nippon Ham record and their best ending since they were the Toei Flyers back in the 1960's. MLB took note and several major league teams expressed interest in Hillman, especailly his old home, Texas. But nobody hired him and he returned to Nippon Ham for another season, where he pulled off perhaps the greatest managing job of all time, taking what may have been the worst team ever to win a pennant into the Japan Series. They were last in the league in just about every offensive category, but his ability to develop his kids on the pitching side as well as the addition of Ryan Glynn overcame the defection of Michihiro Ogasawara to Yomiuri to come out on top in a neck and neck pennant chase. Decided to step down effective at the end of the 2007 season, ostensibly for family reasons, his name being mentioned in some circles as a possible successor for Joe Torre with the Yankees. Make no mistake about it, his last year in Japan makes him something of a magician it was that legendary a performance. |

| Notes: His squad demolished the Japanese team homer record in 2004, but his starting rotation was very inconsistent and the bullpen shoud have been arrested for serial arson. Personalitywise, Horiuchi really doesn't have the people handling skills to be a first rate skipper and so all that taken together sank the proud Giants franchise into mediocrity. |

| Notes: Did not manage 5/7-5/11/2000. Was notorious for hitting his players and even assaulting umpires. However, after taking over at Hanshin, he cleared out a lot of deadweight and whipped the players and the organization into shape. But being such a high strung personality, his high blood pressure forced him to step down with the Tigers and become a special adviser, where he helped bring the talk of devolving NPB into a single league format to a thankfully grinding halt, a turn that almost makes up for his being such an insaniac while helming the Dragons. |

| Notes: Ihara got screwed twice. First, after he took Seibu to a Japan Series, where the Lions were swept by Yomiuri, and then lead the club to a second place showing, they fired him in favor of Tsutomu Itoh for no good reason other than management apparently liked the retiring backstop more than longtime company man Ihara. He took the Orix job, hired due to his reputation for reviving players careers, and then found himself in the maelstrom of the merger with Kintetsu. He was canned at the end of the end of the 1994 campaign. |

Happily, he was able to garner greater success with Lotte. |

| Notes: Thjis intense former Seibu infielder deserved better than what
he endured with the pathtic lot he was given to work with., as their erratic
fielding and record worst pitching drove him to distraction. He also excoriated
introverted infielder Scott Sheldon and proud slugger Fernando Seguignol
publically in the press for the way they were piling up strikeouts, which
didn't sit well with either man. Seguignol was given the heave ho and they
brought in Jose Ortiz, who boosted the offense but couldn't catch a cold,
making things only worse. He was
fired on April 23rd, 2003. Ishige is now running a new independent pro league in Shikoku. |

| Notes: Finished second in 2004, but won playoff with first place Daiei and went to Japan Series, winning it all against Chunichi. But the Lions pitching went way south in 2005 and they were lucky to finish just ahead of Orix for third place. They partially righted the ship in 2006, with Daisuke Matsuzaka having a spectacular year and Fumiya Nishiguchi recovering somewhat from a poor 2005 and second year man Hideaki Wakui giving them a viable number three. But their bullpen stunk and it cost them in the playoffs against Softbank. After losing Matsuzaka to the Red Sox and getting a tremendous year out of Wakui and seeing Takayuki Kishi open his pro career in very encouraging fashion, the Lions offense just never clicked at all and even with incremental improvement in their middle relief, Chikara Onodera flunked out as the closer and it was eventually turned over to Alex Graman, who did a nice job there at the end. This resulted in their first second division finish in nearly three decades and Itoh was fired. |

| Totals | 120 | 41 | 76 | 3 | .350 |
| Notes: Leon originally came on board as the team's batting coach, but was then charged with picking up the pieces left by previous manager Hiromichi Ishige, thus becoming the first ever African-American to helm a Japanese nine. Despite trying to do everything he could to find a winning combination, the club was just too much of a disaster area for him to overcome. Then, when Seibu shafted Haruki Ihara and he became available, Orix management must have felt he was a safer option and let Leon go as the team's skipper, but offered to keep him as a hitting instructor. However, Lee chose to manage in a U.S. independent league instead. As a side note, Ihara, after egging the team into what seemed like a competitive entity the first couple of months of the 2004 schedule, had pretty much thrown in the towel by August and seemed relieved that he wasn't reupped after the team merged with Kintetsu. So Orix may have done Lee a favor by demoting him. |
| Lutz, Joe | Team (Years and [uniform number]): Hiroshima (1975 [70]) |
| Born: 1925 | |
| Died: 10/20/2008 | |

| 1975 | 15 | 6 | 8 | 1 | .429 | 5 |
| Totals | 15 | 6 | 8 | 1 | .429 |
| Notes: Lutz had coached with Cleveland before coming to Japan to be a batting instructor with the Carp in 1974. Decided to quit after being extremely unhappy with the level of umpiring in Japan, leaving after 4/27/1975. Team went on to win its first ever pennant. Lutz was well liked by his players as well as fans and team management, so it was especially too bad that the sub par officiating in NPB got to him. Became a counselor in Florida after leaving Japan. |
