Biography: Became first player ever to homer from each side of the plate in consecutive games (5/5/2002 against Kintetsu, 5/6/2002 against Lotte). Is also the only hitter to go yard from both sides in a contest three times in a season. However, he was also piling up strikeouts, which drove manager Hiromichi Ishige to distraction. Ishige also believed that Seguignol wasn't focused and the big former Expo was in the ex-Seibu shortstop's doghouse to stay. Released at the end of the 2002 season and played in the minors with the Yankees. Came back in 2004 after spending time in the Yankees farm system with a new approach at the plate and became one of the league's premier sluggers. Floundered the first half of the 2006 season and then came on like gangbusters over the last two months before drillig two huge homers to help win a Japan Series title. However, he slumped in 2007 and was released, spending time wityh the Pirates organization before Rakuten signed him in July, 2008. His eight times homereing from both sides of the plate is a Japan record. His three homers while bating both left and righthanded in a game to become the second man ever to do that (6/19/2007). His 44 homers in 2004 are the most ever by a switch hitter. Signed by Orix in June, 2010. 100th homer (4/2/2006 against Orix at Osaka Dome off of Shogo Yamamoto). Scouted for Nippon Ham after retirement. Reference: Wikipedia Japan 1

Biography: Father was Filipino and mother was American. Got his nickname from his face being said to resemble that of a lion's. Was successful in Japan despite not being a good breaking ball hitter, but he killed fastballs and hit a lot of low liners into the seats. Punched out Yakult pitcher Yasujiro Suzuki after being hit by a pitch, also breaking Suzuki's glasses. Suzuki claimed afterward that he just missed his spot and the ball backed up into Sipin. In any event, Yomiuri fined Sipin 100,000 yen (7/10/1978). Sipin was also in an earlier incident in which he pushed Taiyo pitcher Tomiaki Kadota down after one of Kadota's pitches got too close for Sipin's liking, kicking off another brawl. Shigeo Nagashima remarked, "hey, nice fight!" (5/30/1978). Garnered a reputation as a lady's man in Japan. Selected to five all star teams (1972-1974, 1977, 1979). Ran a batting cage center in Santa Clara, California after retirement.

Biography: His name is a mix of Terrence and Melvin because his parents couldn't decide which one they wanted to give him, so Termel was the compromise. When he initially joined the Fighters, he tried to pull everything and ended up with a lot of grounders to second. However, he made a mid-season adjustment and ended up being second in the Pacific League in ARISP. In 2009, missed a few games with a minor hamstring pull. Teams also started putting a shift on when he came to bat, which slowed him down somewhat offensively. But in the second round of the playoffs against Rakuten, he slugged a walkoff grand slam in game three and then powered a three run jack in game four to put his side into the Japan Series and grab the league championship series MVP. Unfortunately, he and the ballclub couldn't come to terms on a new contract and he would eventualy be picked up by Yokohama. Got shutdown against righthanders in 2010 and had to make most of his living off of southpaws. In 2011, sufferend a leg injury in August and that was more or less it for his season. Released by Yokohama and picked up by Nippon Ham. Reference: Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Reggie had kind of a mixed experience in Japan. While on the one hand he admired Sadaharu Oh enough to incorporate some of Oh's training and hitting theories into his teaching methods while he was the Dodgers hitting instructor, he was also angered by the racial epithets he heard at the ballpark and he even got into a couple of fights with opposing players. Suffered wrist, shoulder and knee injuries in 1984 and retired. Moreover, he claimed that Japanese baseball was 50 years behind MLB and compared it to "forced labor" rather than something one would enjoy playing. He did, though, inspire a fictional manga (a kind of Japanese comic book) called "Reggie!" that is available in Japan. As far as I know, he is the only foreign player to be so commemorated. He is definitely one of the finest all around ex-MLB stars that Japan has ever had the good fortune to see in action.

That bat, by the way, had a hairline crack in it. It then broke completely in the next game. Was fastest in Japanese history ever to 100 career homers. Homered in five straight games (4/21-4/26/1981). Drove in ten runs in a game (4/20/1980). Struckout five times in a game to tie a Japan record (7/4/1980). Selected to one all star team (1981). Used to put coffee on his rice. Returned home to Samoa after retirement, where he was murdered. |

Biography: Joined the Carp Academy in the Dominican Republic in November, 1994. After the end of the 1997 season, asked for a big raise, which the Carp front office refused. He then resorted to arbitration, which also proved futile. So he basically fled for MLB with thehelp of agent Don Nomura and, after auditioning for several MLB teams, including Cleveland, was ultimately signed by the Yankees. Hiroshima threatened to sue, but didn't. He was subsequently traded to Texas in the Alex Rodriguez deal.
