Biography: Started playing baseball in fourth grade. Also had ambitions of being a bicycle racer. Moved from the outfield to catcher in junior high. Also did some sumo wrestling in junior high. He also had high school kohai who later became professional sumo wrestlers. Slugged 56 homers lifetime in high school. Wanted to play for Yomiuri. Drafted on the second round by Chunichi (1986). Was then sent to the Arizona Instructional League to learn to play third base. He belted three homers in a game there. Won Western League homer and RBI crowns (1989-1990). Saved some folks from a burning building and was subsequently given a commendation for it (12/19/1990). His days as a castcher were numbered after Hiroshima speedster Kozo Shoda stole five bases off of him in a game (10/15/1989 against Hiroshima at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium). Didn't take part in the 1999 Japan Series due to a late season collision with Yakult outfielder Mitsuru Manaka at first base that resulted in a wrist fracture. Declared free agency in 2001 and looked like he was headed to Yokohama, but the Dragons kept him with a three year offer. Traded to Orix for pitcher Masafumi Hirai in January, 2003. Was unhappy with the way that manager Haruki Ihara was using him and grumbled about it, earning him a demotion to the minors as punishment (2004). Was the allowed to leave for Rakuten after the Orix-Rakuten merger during the 2004 offseason. Slugged the first pinch hit homer in Rakuten history (5/7/2005 against Yomiuri at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the eighth off of Yukinaga Maeda). Made a visit to a Sendai area elementary school one day and promised to hit a home run for them that night. He connected for a grand slam (7/27/2005 against Nippon Ham at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the fourth inning off of Naoyuki Tateishi). He and infielder Jose Fernandez slugged grand slams in the same inning off of Masato Yoshii to set a Pacific League record because it was the first time that had been done off of one pitcher (4/1/2007 against Orix in the third inning). 100th homer (8/18/1998 against Yakult at Meiji Jingu Stadium off of Mark Acre). 200th homer (8/19/2003 against Daiei at Fukuoka Dome in the second inning off of Shinji Kurano, the 77th man to that mark). 300th homer (4/3/2008 against Lotte at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the third inning off of Yasutomo Kubo, the 32nd man to that mark and the second oldest all time). 1000th hit (7/2/2005 against Nippon Ham at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the third inning off of Shintaro Ejiri, a single to left). 1000th strikeout (8/1/2006 against Softbank at Fukuoka Dome from Nagisa Arakaki in the third inning, the 39th man to that mark). 1000th game (10/6/2001 against Hiroshima at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium). 1500th game (6/14/2007 against Chunichi at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium). 1000th RBI (8/13/2009 against Softbank at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the sixth inning on a two run double to left off of Yoshiaki Fujioka, the 35th man to that mark and the oldest at 40 years and nine months to accomplish it in NPB history). Biography: Played in five straight Koshien Tournaments (summer 1924-summer 1926), homering in each tournament. Batted cleanup in college. Tokyo Big Six University League batting champ (1929F). Drafted into the military in the middle of the 1942 season and served in Dairen, Manchuria, where he played on a club baseball team. Was first ever playing manager. Hit first ever Hankyu homer (5/22/1936 against Tokyo Giants off of Shichinosuke Sakurai at Takarazuka). Also slugged first ever sayonara homer in Japanese history (7/12/1936 against Nagoya off of Kazuyoshi Matsuura at Koshien Stadium). Umpired after WWII. Married to wife Hatsuko.
