Biography: Drafted on the fifth round as a pitcher (1976). Deaf in one ear. Worked at a batting center after first release from Kintetsu. Slammed a three run pinch hit homer off of a first pitch fastball from Keiichi Yabu in an all star game to win the MVP (game one, 1996). Homered to right in last at bat as a pro to break a 4-4 tie (9/30/1999 in the top of the ninth at Fukuoka Dome off of Shinohara on a 3-0 fastball). Selected to five all star teams (1986, 1989-1990, 1993, 1996).

Biography: Youngest of four brothers, he was introduced to baseball by his father, a fan of the Carp. He started playing it in third grade. Joined his junior high baseball team (1959). As a ninth grader, pitched and batted cleanup to propel his school to a city championship. Moved over to high school and went immediately into the starting lineup. Went to college as a pitcher. He was converted into an outfielder and went 0-3 in his first game while batting eighth (1966). He ultimately hit .237 on the season. Drilled first college homer (5/2/1967 against Waseda University off of Kunikazu Ogawa). Hit .214 for that season and then followed it up with a .260 campaign in the fall. He then raised that to .419 (spring 1968). Along with teammate Koichi Tabuchi, cracked two homers, one to center and one to left,  in consecutive at bats on opening day of the fall season schedule against Tokyo University. He finished his college career that season with a .357 average. Drafted on the first round (1968). Spent some time training with the Houston Astros (1970). 1000th hit (5/22/1977 against Yomiuri off of Sadaoka at Korakuen Stadium, a grand slam). 2000th Hit (5/5/1984 against Yomiuri off of Hiromi Makihara at Korakuen Stadium, a single to left). Had a hit in a then record nine consecutive at bats (7/6-8/1972 against Yomiuri). Was struck on the head tiwce by pitches during an exhibition game and was hospitalized for five days (1973). Hammered six opening day homers.  Launched 492 foot homer (6/3/1978 against Yomiuri at Korakuen Stadium). Had five BB/HBP in one game to become the ninth in history to do that (7/15/1980 against Yakult). Went deep against Yomiuri 100 times lifetime. Racked up an 872 consecutive games played streak (10/22/1976-8/28/1983, eighth all time; it ended due to back pain). 1000th RBI (8/2/1981against Chunichi to become the 13th all time to that mark). Hit into a triple play (6/24/1983 against Yomiuri in the third inning, 5-4-3). Became fourth man in history with ten straight 20 homer campaigns (6/29/1983 against Taiyo in the third). Signed most lucrative contract ever offered by Hiroshima, a deal for 85 million yen (12/11/1984). Played on five pennant winners and three Japan Series champions, batting .250 in 35 games (1975, 1979-1980, 1984, 1986). Selected to 14 all star teams, batting .316 in 41 games (1973-1986). Was named all star MVP twice (1975, 1979). His 4361 total bases is seventh all time. Became a baseball commentator for NHK and NTV (1987, 1994-2000). Slugged homers in consecutive all star at bats (game one, 1975, and last at bat of game two and first at bat of game three, 1979). Had two homers in each of three all star games (game one, 1975, game three, 1979, and game one, 1983). Had one all star walkoff homer (game three, 1979). His 14 all star roundtrippers is a Japan record. His favorite words are "doryoku (effort)," and "nintai (patience)." Could reportedly do a complete trip around the bases in 14.5 seconds and had a cannon. 200th homer (8/11/1977 against Hanshin off of Miyata at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in the eighth inning). 300th homer (4/8/1980 against Taiyo in the first inning off of Endo at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium). 400th homer (6/5/1982 against Yomiuri off of Yoshitaka Katori in the sixth inning at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium to become the eight man to that mark in history). 500th homer (7/26/1985 against Chunichi in the second inning at Nagoya Stadium off of Sugimoto in the second inning  to become the fourth man in history to that figure). Wacked 505th homer to move into third place all time in homers (9/5/1985 in the eighth inning against Yomiuri at Korakuen Stadium off of Miyamoto). Last Homer (10/13/1986 in the ninth inning against Yakult off of Yano at Meiji Jingu Stadium). Number 8 was retired. He is fourth all time in homers. Had 158 games where he garnered three or more hits, fourth most in CL history (three his 132, four hits 25, five hits 1). Holds CL record for most consecutive Gold Gloves. Blated 45,000th homer in Japanese pro history (5/15/1982 against Taiyo). Had 302 outfield chances without an error to set a CL record (4/5-8/24/1975). Lead league in outfield assists seven years running. His gten Best Nines as an outfielder is a Central League record. He is married and has three kids.

Biography: Played in one Koshien Tournament (1969). Drafted on the fifth round (1975). Slugged a come from behind ninth inning pinch hit  grand slam (6/13/1987 against Kintetsu at Nagoya Stadium off of Tetsuro Kato). Selected to two all star teams (1982, 1985). Coached at the top level and managed in  the minors for Lotte before becoming the team's manager.
