Biography: iography: Started playing baseball in fourth grade. Played in one Koshien Tournament (summer 1989). Was team captain and the its cleanup hitter in college, picking up a Sendai Big Six University League MVP his senior year to go along with a batting title and two Best Nine nominations during his career there. . Played on a Japanese Intercontinental Cup team. Batted .429 with nine homers and 21 stolen bases for his industrial league career. Drafted on the fourth round as a catcher (1996). Moved to the outfield in 1997 because they needed his bat and he wasn't going to dislodge incumbent catcher Tsutomu Itoh, one of the best game callers in Japan. Played on the Japanese olympic baseball team at Athens (2004). Broke a 54 year old record for most extra base hits in a Japan Series with eight, eclipsing hall of famer Isao Harimoto's seven in 1950 (2004). His 26 total bases in a Japan Series was also a record, besting a 46 year old mark of 25 by hall of famer Yasumitsu Toyoda (2004). Tied a record with four homers in a Japan Series (2004). Slugged two homers in game six of the 2004 Japan Series and totaled three RBIs in a 4-2 victory to even the series up at three apiece. Was the first righthand hitter to win a batting title in the Pacific League since Hatsuhiko Tsuji in 1993. Tsuji, by the way, was with Seibu and wore number 5. Has a real funky sweeping swing and will kill anything down and in.  1000th hit (9/8/2007 against Nippon Ham at Sapporo Dome off of Mitsuo Yoshikawa in the second inning, a single to left). Selected to three all star teams (2003-2005). Went to high school with Japanese olympic marathon gold medalist Naoko Takahashi, but they never met. Hobbies are fishing, pachinko and mah jong.

Biography: Born to father Yoshimasa and mother Tetsuko as their first child. Hanshin won the pennant for the first time in 15 season that year. Played baseball from the time he was in elementary school. Also took kendo in junior high school, where he was the regular shortstop and batted third. He moved on to high school and planned to become a teacher. Played in a summer Koshien as a sophomore third baseman, where Abiko lost in the first game and was this eliminated. He entered Nihon University, where he was a batting champ in the spring of his junior year, and played in the L.A. Olympics as a senior. Was drafted in the third round by Hanshin in 1984 and played on a Japan Series champion in 1985.. 432 consecutive chances without an error in 1993 was a record. His 21 game hitting streak beginning on Opening Day was a record for such skeins to kick off a season. Registered his 200th sacrifice bunt on 6/1/1999, beconing the 19th in history to do that. Was selected to seven all star teams (1989, 1992-1996, 1999). Was last member of 1985 championship team to retire. Became a team batting coach after retirement. 56 sac bunts in 1988 was a Japan record, eclipsing Chunichi's Ken Hirano's mark of 51 in 1982 (Yomiuri shortstop Masahiro Kawai now holds that record with 66 in 1991). His 1929 plate appearances without a homer is also a Japan record. His 24 game hitting streak right from opening day is a record. Went his first 3672 plate appearances without hitting anything other than a solo homer. Has fourth fewest lifetime homers of any player with 4000 or more at bats.
