Biography: Started playing baseball in second grade. Was a Chunichi Dragons fan growing up. Used to have a poster of Ken Macha in his room back when Macha was a Drafons infielder.. However, it is said that his batting style was inspired by Chunichi great Yasushi Tao. Played third in junior high and batted sixth in addition to pitching. Played left and batted third in high school before becoming the team's ace on the mound. Played in two Koshien Tournaments, going a total of 1-9 in two games and posting an ERA of 3.00 in one start, a complete game loss by a score of 3-2 to Matsusho Gakuen during the 1991 tourney (summer 1990, spring 1991). Finished with a .459 average in 84 games in high school (101-220) with four homers and 75 RBIs as well as 63 steals. As a pitcher, he was in 17 games and posted a 1.13 ERA in 87.1 innings, striking out 73.  Drafted on the fourth round (1991). Finished second in batting in the Hawaiian Winter League, playing with one Jason Giambi (1993). Despite being named MVP of a minor league all star game and winning that circuit's batting crown, he was told by then Orix manager Shozo Doi that he would never hit using the batting style he had. When Doi was given the boot, new skipper Akira Ogi immediately inserted Ichiro into the top of the lineup and he responded with a historic 210 hit campaign, still the single season record, and the first of his seven straight batting titles (1994). For that effort, he had his pay increased ten fold from eight million yen to 80 million. He also set a record for most consecutive games reaching base with 69 (5/21-8/26/1994). He batted .413 during that stretch (117-283).He was given a Matsutaro Shoriki Award (1994). His 18 HBP in a season was a then PL record (1995). Was given another Matsutaro Shoriki Award (1995). Was brought in to pitch in the ninth inning and with two outs in a game during the 1996 all star series with Hideki Matsui due up. That angered Central League manager Katsuya Nomura, who sent pitcher Shingo Takatsu up to pinch hit. Takatsu grounded out to end the game. Ichiro was clocked in that game at 91mph. His walkoff double gave Orix their second straight Pacific League pennant (9/23/1996 against Nippon Ham in the bottom of the tenth inning at Kobe Green Stadium). Slugged a gane winning homer to right in the 1996 Japan Series in the tenth inning of game one off of Hirofumi Kono. Went 216 at bats without a strikeout, a Japan record (1997).  Along with Kazuhiro Sasaki, became a 500 million yen player. During spring training of 1999, worked out with the Seattle Mariners. His seven straight seasons with a .340 average or better is a Japan record. Only man in Japanese baseball history to win five batting titles in a row while playing in every game (1994-1998). His 26 three hits or more games in a season is a Japan record (1996). Moreover, his eight four hit games that season was a then Japan record. His three straight MVPs tied a Japan record. His seven straight seasons with a .400 or better OBP is a Pacific League record (1004-2000). His six straight years leading the league in intentional walks is a Pacific League record. His five straight years leading the league in hits is a Pacific League record (1994-1998). His three straight years with 100 or more runs scored is a Pacific League record (1994-1996). Posted to the Mariners in winter, 2000 for $13 million, which Orix then used to pay for its entire player payroll for the coming season. Named AL Rookie of the Year and MVP (2001), AL Batting title (2001), Most all star votes (2001-2002), lead AL in hits (2001), broke record for hits by an MLB rookie (242), MLB Gold Glove (2001-2002), SB title (2001). Is married to former tv announcer Yumiko Fukushima.1000th hit (4/20/1999, a two run homer in the ninth inning against Nippon Ham at Tokyo Dome off of Satoru Kanemura in his 757th game, fastest ever to that figure). Selected to seven NPB all star teams (1994-2000). Set MLB single season hits record with 262 (2004).  MLB Stats Was said to have lived on little more than yakiniku (grilled meat) while he was single, but once he got married, his wife made him eat vegetables, too. There is a youth baseball tournament in Aichi Prefecture named for Ichiro  Website Quoted by Nikkan Sports in January, 2006 as saying on a television show that "I am happier if I get four hits in a loss than if I go 0-4 in a win because as a pro, if you don't put up the numbers, you get released." 3,000th hit NPB/MLB combined (7/29/2008 against Texas at the Ballpark at Arlington in the first inning off of Luis Mendoza, a looper to left).
