Biography: Started playing baseball in first grade in Little League. Later played in Pony League. Drafted on the third round (1995). Slugged the last home run in the history of the old Nagoya Stadium (10/6/1996 against Chunichi in the eighth inning off of Masataka Endo). Had a streak of nine straight official at bats with a hit and 12 consecutive plate appearances reaching base during that same run (4/23-4/25/1997). Set a then Central League hits and official at bats records in 2002. Connected for the 40,000th homer in Central League history (6/2/2005 against Nippon Ham at at Sapporo Dome in the sixth inning off of Satoru Kanemura). Sold to Seibu during the 2008 offseason. 1000th game (6/5/2004 against Yakult at Meiji Jingu Stadium). 1000th hit (5/5/2004 against Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium in the fourth inning off of Daisuke Miura, a single to left). 100th homer (5/29/2004 against Yokohama at Tokyo Dome in the fifth inning off of Ken Kadokura, a solo jack). Selected to two all star teams (1998, 2002). Is a pretty bad defensive outfielder despite good speed and range and has a below average throwing arm. However, he reportedly has above average batspeed, but because he hits down on the ball he doesn't produce a lot of power, though the balls he does drive out tend to leave in the blink of an eye. Became a radio and tv baseball commentator after retirment. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball in elementary school with a local youth team thanks to the influence of his older brother. His father died when he was a college sophomore. Won a batting title his junior year and was named team captain as a senior. He also set a league record with five homers in a season and was selected to two Best Nine squads. Drafted on the eighth round (2002). In 2007, had two triples in a game and needed a double for the cycle and didn't get it. Those were his only three baggers for the season. Suffered a shoulder inflammation in 2009, causing him to miss a month before he just decided to play through it before it got too painful for him in late August, and that ended his season. Hurt his shoulder at the end of June, 2010 and missed six weeks.  Official Blog   Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball in first grade. Was reportedly a victim in eight auto accidents when he was in elemntary school. Was a member of the Japanese olympic baseball team that played at Barcelona (1992). Drafted in the fifth round (1989). When his salary was raised to 22 million yen one season, he went out andbought a 20 million yen Mercedes and planned to live on the remaining two milion yen. Trouble was that he forgot that he had to play tax on that salary and his grandfather had to bail him out with the necessary funds (1994). Is said to be able to get it up to 93mph and even pitched in exhbition games in 1998, but he got lit up and has never taken the mound in regular season action. Reportedly almost quit baseball due to not seeing eye to eye with  manager Taira Fujita (1995). When asked by manager Katsuya Nomura why he doesn't steal bases despite having excellent speed, Shinjo is said to have responded, "because I have no interest in it." Nomura later referred to Shinjo as "a spaceman." Shinjo also once revealed that he didn't want to lift weights because the bigger leg muscles that would develp wouldn't look good in jeans. However, he then got got every question right on Japan's version of Millionaire. Selected to six all star teams (1994, 1997, 1999-2000, 2004, 2006). Named all star game MVP (game three, 1999). Signed with Mets for not much more than the major league minimum after trning down a $2 million a season pact offered by Hanshin during offseason (2000). Then went to San Francisco and is now back with the Mets. First ever Japanese to bat cleanup in an MLB game (8/3/2001 against Arizona, going 0-4 against Randy Johnson) as well as cranking the first grand slam by a Japanese major leaguer and becoming the first Japanese to play in a World Series game as well as getting a hit in the fall classic. Slugged a sayonara grand slam, but in celebrating it, passed teammate Yukio Tanaka on thebasepaths and was called out, thus missing a chance to be one of just a couple of players to smack a walkoff granny in both leagues (9/20/2004 against Daiei at Sapporo Dome in the 12th inning of a 12-12 game). Announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season, on 4/18/2006 after a gem in which he slugged a grand slam and a solo homer. 100th homer (7/25/1998 against Yokohama in the second inning at Koshien Stadium off of Hiroki Nomura, a solo jack to left). 200th homer (6/16/2006 against Hiroshima at Sapporo Dome off of Shinji Sasaoka in the second inning, a solo shot to right He is the 87th man to that mark). Married to wife and tv personality Shiho Okochi.
