Biography: The youngest of seven children, he had trouble fitting in with the baseball team in high school and dropped out and rejoined it numerous times. He also cut class a lot. Dropped out of college soon after entering due to disagreement with coaches over workout routine. He returned to Akita and thought about becoming a pro bowler, even working at a bowling alley for a while. He then joined Toshiba at age 20. Drafted on the third round (1978). Slugged homers in five consecutive Eastern League games to set a new record (1980). Won three Triple Crowns (1982, 1985-1986), the only pl.ayer to have ever done that .When he won it in 1982, he became the fourth man to do it in Japanese history plus he was the youngest to win it in Japanese annals. Became the fourth man in history to win three batting titles consecutively (1983). Is only one of two men to win consecutive Triple Crowns. Set new league records for RBIs, total bases,  slugging percentage and runs scored while tying the circuit standard in single season homers and posting the highest average ever for a righthanded hitter (1985). Was first player ever to register back to back 50 homer campaigns (1985-1986). What is perhaps remarkable about his 1986 accomplishments is that he had back pain so bad during the offseason that he couldn't even sit down normally and was dogged by it all season. Yet, he still racked up the fourth best homer to at bats ratio in Japanese history (1:8.34) that year. He was the only other hitter besides Sadaharu Oh to make it into the top ten all time in homers to at bats ratio (and he did it twice) before Alex Cabrera in 2002. Became the first player ever to win RBI titles in both leagues (1989). Had a five game homer streak (10/10-14/1989). Became first player ever to win homer crowns in each league (1990). Was fastest ever to 350 career homers, doing it in 1257 games (5/1990). His six walks in a game is a record (10/13/1991 against Yakult). Became only second player to have at least 1000 hits in each league (5/28/1997 against Daiei). Traded for four players to Chunichi (1986). Went to Yomiuri as a free agent (1993). 2000th hit (4/15/1995 against Hanshin, a homer to leftcenter off of Kubo). Selected to 15 all star teams and batted .365 (46-126) in 39 games with 11 homers and 27 RBIs while stealing three bases (1981-1991, 1993, 1995-1997). Won two all star MVP's (game three 1983, game one 1995). Credited with helping Norihiro Nakamura take his hitting to the next level (2001). He was the first player to break the 100 million yen, 200 million yen, 300 million yen and 400 million yen salary barriers. The odd thing about Ochiai is that he would put his foot in the bucket and yet could still drill pitches away over the rightcenterfield fence. Would also seek to wack the ball at the pitcher if he had hit him in a previous at bat and often did it successfully. First player to request salary arbitration in 1991 (the Japanese version is way different form that of MLB). He lost (as players usually do) and quit the player's association due to seeing it as a pointless entity since it lacks any real power. Ochiai caught a lot of grief from fans and the media for requesting arbitration, so it was a pretty unpleasant ordeal for him. Homered with a man on in the second off of Imanaka and singled in a run before being taken out of a game with a foot injury that decided a pennant race (10/8/1994 against Chunichi). As Yomiuri's cleanup hitter, he batted .291 with 48 homers. Refused membership in the Meikyukai (famous players association), saying that the arbitrary numbers required for entrance left a lot of great players out. His 500th, 1000th, 1500th and 2000th hits were all homers, the first player to ever do that. 176 of his homers were to right. Chunichi was being no hit with one out in the ninth in one game against Yomiuri ace Masaki Saito and a pinch hit single ruined it. Ochiai then came up and slugged a three run walkoff homer (8/12/1989 at Nagoya Stadium). Was named to Best Nine squads at three different positions. Now works mainly as a baseball commentator for Asahi Television. In the hidebound world of Japanese baseball, Ochiai, a self-described pessimist and introvert, was a black sheep and if "My Way" isn't his favorite song, it should be.  Good for him. He is married to wife Nobuko and has a son.

Biography: Started playing baseball in third grade as a catcher. Drafted on the fourth round (1997). Because he wore glasses and had a strong arm while also being a very able signal caller and gloveman, they hoped he would evolve into the next Atsuya Furuta. That didn't happen. Moved to Chunichi as a compensation pick for the Giants signing free agent Shigeki Noguchi. Had Lasik surgery during the 2007 offseason and was able to give up the glasses. Is noted for his sense of humor and keeps everyone loose in the clubhouse.  Is married to former Asahi Aomori TV announcer Ena Ishii and they have a son. Referemce:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball at age seven. Played in Chiba Little League. Had been an infielder and also played some outfield up through his first year in high school, but due to team needs, became a catcher his second year. Didn't homer at all in high school. Had a .400 season in the industrial leagues. Drafted on the third round (1996). Lead the Pacific League in pinch hits in 1998 with 17. Was converted into a first baseman in 1999. Broke his left index finger catching a pop fly (5/22/1998). Wasn't very able at throwing runners out, so he was converted into a first baseman in 1999 and put into the two hole in the order, where he wasn't asked to sacrifice even once, almost unheard of for a hitter in that spot in the lineup. Slammed a two run homer off of Daisuke Matsuzaka in Matsuzaka's first pro start while playing with a broken finger (4/7/1999). Became the first Nippon Ham (only) player ever to 150 hits in a season (1999). His 102 RBIs in 2000 was a then team record. His 126 runs scored was a then Pacific League record. Had a 17 consecutive game in which he scored at least one run, a Japan record (8/5-8/27/2001). His 195 hits in 2001 is a franchise record. His 14 straight plate appearances getting on base is a Japan record (8/23-8/27/2003). Also had a 60 straight game streak where he reached base safely at least once (6/13-9/9/2001). 100th homer (5/4/2002 against Daiei off of Brady Raggio, a three run jack). Was the first batting champ in franchise history since hall of famer Isao Harimoto in 1974 (2002). Was converted into a third baseman in 2003 with mixed results. Cracked a rib in a collision with Daiei second baseman Tadahito Iguchi and missed the next two weeks (5/9/2004). 1000th hit (7/24/2004, the fastest in Pacific League history to that mark). First walkoff homer (8/7/2005 against Seibu off of Kiyoshi Toyoda at Sapporo Dome  in the bottom of the ninth, a solo jack to centerfield). Was the starting first baseman of the 2004 Japanese olympic baseball team at Athens. 1000th game (8/24/2005 against Seibu at Seibu Dome in a start at third base). 1500th game (6/13/2009 against Softbank at Fukuoka Dome in a start at third base). 200th homer (8/24/2005 against Seibu at Seibu Dome off of Daisuke Matsuzaka in the eighth inning, a solo jack to right in his 1000th career game). . 300th homer (9/19/2008 against Hanshin at Tokyo Dome off of Jeff Williams). 1000th RBI (8/27/2009 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome on a two run jack to right). His four straight years of a .300 average with 30 homers tied a PL record (2000-2003). He is also on the cusp of becoming the highest average hitter in Japanese history for players with 4000 or more official at bats, which is currently hed by Leron Lee (Lotte) at .320.Is the first player ever to wear number 2 and win a batting title. 1000th hit (7/24/2004 to become the fastest former industrial league player ever to that mark). 1500th hit (9/15/2007 against Hiroshima at Tokyo Dome in the sixth inning off of Michito Miyazaki, a double to right. He is the fourth fastest in history to that mark). Ogasawara is known as a supremely confident player, but he is supersitious about talking about himself, afraid his luck will disappear if he starts bragging. Was given is nickname by now former teammate Tsutomu Iwamoto after Ogasawara clubbed a pinch hit homer despite a broken pinky finger.  Qualified for free agency and was signed by Yomiuri during the 2006 offseason. Three homer game (5/28/2007 against Orix). Slugged Giants 8500th homer in team history (6/30/2007 against Hiroshima at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium off of Hiroki Kuroda in the sixth inning, a solo homer to right). Became the 73rd cleanup hitter in Yomiuri history. Had knee surgery after the 2007 season.   Selected to 11 all star teams (1999-2009). Had tried to sacrifice eight previous times in his career, failing to do so successfully seven times and beating the eighth out for a hit before finally putting one down in 2008. Finally laid one down in 2008. While Trey Hillman has called Ogasawara the best hitter he has ever coached, he has also said he doesn't want players imitating his batting style. Became the first position player in history to win MVP awards in both leagues and the first ever in history to win it in one league and then take it in the opposing circuit the following campaign (2007).Was a member of Japan's first two WBC teams (2006, 2009).  Is married with two kids and his wife reportedly wears the pants in the family.
