Biography: Father played baseball as a kid while mom played softball. Started playing baseball in third grade. Played Senior League ball in junior high. Was his team's cleanup hitter in high school. Played in one Koshien Tournament (summer 1990). Became his team's pitching ace as a senior. Slugged a total of 25 homers in high school. Drafted on the fourth round (1991). Played for Japan at the Sydney (2000; 12-39 with two homers and eight RBIs as its cleanup hitter) and Athens Olympic Games (2004). Had a prelimianry agreement with the New York Mets after becoming a free agent in the 2002 offseason, but then decided to reneg and stay with , Kintetsu, using as his excuse that the news of his intending to go to MLB was leaked before he had time to formally notify the Buffaloes that he was going to do so out of courtesy. Had an injury riddled 2004 season and was posted during the offseason. Note: his high school is in Osaka. Not to be confused with Tokyo's Shibuya district. When he hit for the cycle, it also marked his first pro triple. Traded grand slams in a game with Orix with Ichiro in the seventh inning (5/25/1996). Slugged three grand slams in both 2000 and 2001.Had five straight games with a homer (6/3-6/9/2000). Single game high for RBIs is nine (5/29/2001 against Nippon Ham). Got some batting instruction from Lotte and Chunichi great Hiromitsu Ochiai during spring training of 2001 and then went out and had a career years thanks to being more willing to use the whole field. Tied a Pacific League record with five walks in a game (5/3/2003 against Nippon Ham). Slugged a homer in each of the three 2001 all star games (game one off of Yomiuri's Yusaki Iriki, game two off of Yakult's Shugo Fujii and game three off of Chunichi's Shigeki Noguchi). Has had a broken wrist (9/1996) a knee problem that ultimately required surgery (2003). Suffered more knee problems in 2004 as well. 1000th hit (5/29/2002 against Lotte, a homer). 1500th hit (9/26/2007 against Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome in the first inning off of Hisanori Takahashi, a single to left). 100th homer (9/16/1998 against Lotte at Osaka Dome in the ninth inning off of Yasuyuki Kawamoto, a walkoff three run jack). 200th homer (6/13/2001 against Daiei at Fukuoka Dome in the seventh inning off of Shuji Yoshida, the 72nd man to that mark). 300th homer (6/4/2004 against Lotte at Chiba Marine Stadium in the sixth inning off of Koji Takagi, a two run jack). 1000th RBI (7/5/2007 against Hiroshima at Nagoya Dome, a two run double off of Jared Fernandez in the fourth inning with the bases loaded). Had a 694 consecutive games played streak that ended 5/23/2003. His trademarks are dyed hair and a two hand bat flip. Longest homer was on a grand slam, estimated at 155 meters, approximately 505 feet (8/22/2001 at Osaka Dome aganst Orix). Combined with Tuffy Rhodes to hit a record 101 homers, the most of any teammates on one team n hstory. Also, on the night of Rhodes 55th homer, slammed a two run sayonara homer into the third deck in rightcenter off of a fastball up and away from Daisuke Matsuzaka at Osaka Dome to put the Buffs within one game of the PL flag. His eight walkoff homers are tied for third most all time. Drives a Mercedes and his hobby is golf. Is married to wife Hiroko and has three daughters. Was posted during the 2004 offseason to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But he didn't hit after a bried stint at the big club level and spent the remainder of the year with their minor league affiliate in Las Vegas. At the end of the schedule, Orix came calling and he accepted their offer. He had a terrible injury filled year with the Buffaloes, so they let him go and he was signed by Chunichi, where he revived his career. But he was released by the Dragons after the 2008 campaign and signed by Rakuten, becoming their first free agent signing. Had some back problems in 2009. 1000th game (9/2/2001 against Nippon Ham at Tokyo Dome in a start at third base). 1500th game (5/6/2007 against Yokohama at Nagoya Dome in a start at third base). His nine lifetime walkoff homers is third most all time. Selected to seven all star teams (1995-1996, 1999-2002, 2004i). Selected all star game MVP (game three, 2001). Biography:  Started playing baseball at age four on a team his father coached. Was mainly a catcher on that club as well as on his Boys League squad when he was in junior high. Played first base in high school and batted cleanup, slugging 83 homers, the third highest total in Japanese schoolboy annals, and was dubbed the "Naniwa Cabrera (Osaka's answer to Alex Cabrera)."Drafted on the second round (2001). Three of his seven homers in the minors in 2002 were grand slams and he then followed that up with am Eastern League homer crown in 2003, but also lead that circuit in strikeouts. For the first few years of his career, had trouble handling the slider and he was often platooned as a result. But he blossomed in 2008 powerwise after a subtle change to his timing and belted a team record for a Japanese player 46 dingers (which he improved to 48 in 2009), but he also lead the PL in errors as his defensive problems continued. However, he also played through a broken cheekbone suffered when hit in May by Orix hurler Chihiro Kaneko. 100th homer (5/13/2009 against Orix at Kober Green Stadium in the third inning off of Shogo Yamamoto, a two run jack to right). Is the first Japanese Lion since hall of famer Futoshi Nakanishi to win consecutive homer titles. His 122 RBIs in 2009 is a team record. Lead all of Japanese baseball in OPS in 2009. His nickname was from his favorite word, "okawari," which means to eat another serving at the dinner table. Selected to two all star teams (2008-2009). Married to wife Marie and has a son.
