Biography: Started playing baseball in fifth grade. Was a pitcher in junior high before going to the outfield in high school. Batted immediately behind Hideki Matsui at Seiryo. Played in two Koshien Tournaments (summer 1989-1990). Drafted on the sixth round (1990). His 1566 consecutive plate appearances without a homer was the slowest to his first in history.  Broke his shoulder attempting a diving catch in a game against Lotte in August, 2003 and was out for the rest of the regular seasonm but made it back for the Japan Series. Moved to Orix via free agency. Traded to Softbank in October, 2008. Missed the first few weeks of the 2009 season due to a calf pull. 1000th game (5/3/2003 against Lotte at Fukuoka Dome in a start in centerfield). 1500th game (7/7/2007 against Rakuten at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in a start in leftfield).  1000th hit (5/27/2005 against Yomiuri at Osaka Dome in the first inning off of Scott Mullen). Biography: Started out playing nanshiki ball in third grade with a local youth team before moving on to Boys League in junior high. Was his team's pitching ace in high school and was reportedly clocked at 88mph. Played in two Koshien Tournaments (spring, summer 1998). Was selected to four league Best Nines and slugged 20 homers for his collegiate career, second most all time in the Tokyo Metropolitan University Baseball League's history, while batting .275 and driving in 70 runs. Also played on two collegiate all star teams that faced off against ones from the U.S. (2001-2002). Drafted on the third round (2002). Came into NPB as a dead high fastball pull hitter, but in 2007, focused much more on going the other way with good results. His ten homers in a month in September, 2003 set a new rookie record. But he was hit by a pitch on the hand at the end of that month and was out for the remainder of the schedule. He was a streaky hitter and that combined with his less than satisfying defense saw him ride the pine a lot when he was slumping. Went yard off of John Lackey during an NPB-MLB all star game (2006). Homered off of Hiroshima veteran Sasaoka during the latter's retirement game for the dinger that would give him the Central League homer crown, but he never felt right about it and apologized to Sasaoka personally for doing it. Sasaoka just laughed it off (10/6/2007). Became more adept at going to the opposite field in 2008, helping him grab a homer crown. Hates the Giants. because they didn't want to pick him in one of the top rounds, so he chose Yokohama. First Yokohama player ever with three straight 30 homer seasons and his 46 roundtrippers in 2008 are a team record. Was the first Japanese hitter to capture back to back homer titles in the Central League since Hiromitsu Ochiai in 1990-1991. Had a five game homer streak (7/15-7/19/2008). Named to Japan's WBC contingent, leading the team's offensive attack until a leg injury forced him off the squad (2009). 100th homer (4/10/2007 against Yakult off of Masanori Ishikawa). 200th homer (7/28/2009 against Hanshin at Koshien Stadium in the first inning off of Yuya Ando, a three run jack to left and the fastest to that mark in tema history at 846 games). ).
