Biography: Played in two Koshien Tournaments (spring, summer 1971). Drafted on the fifth round (1976). Had surgery to fix a dislocated shoulder in 1979 and started switch hitting while alsomoving to the outfield. 76 steals in 1983 is a Central League record. Came into one game as a ninth inning pinch runner for Kenji Awaguchi and the Giants batted around in that inning, so he came to bat and clubbed a grand slam (6/13/1977 against Taiyo at Kawasaki Stadium off of Shigeyuki Takahashi). Selected to six all star teams (1981-1985, 1987). Retired due his weak throwing arm not being up to the bigger dimensions of Tokyo Dome. After retiring, he worked as a baseball commentator for NTV before taking a coaching job with Yomiuri, eventually being named manager of their minor league team. He then became a scout and then went back to coaching for the Giants.

Biography: Was introduced to baseball by his father in pre-school. Started playing baseball in fourth grade. By the time he graduated junior high, he was only 5'4" and he wondered if he was going to be able to continue playing baseball when he went to high school. But he grew five inches in a year, which did away with that worry. Hurt his left elbow bad enough in high school that he wasn't able to throw with it, probably from excessive throwing and swinging of the bat. So Matsunaka learned to throw with his right well enough to stay on the team and even play in games. Fortunately, his elbow recove2r46e1221d after he had surgery on the lebow while in the industrial leagues. Batted cleanup for the Japanese olympic baseball team that played at Atlanta amd took home a silver medal after drilling five homers. Drafted on the second round (1996). Won a Western League (minor league) homer crown (1998) and then a Triple Crown (1999), Played in the Sydney Olympics (2000). Won the first Triple Crown in 18 years (2004). He also lead the same season in TB, Hits, OBP and Runs scored, thus becoming only the second ,man ever to do that in a Triple Crown year. Suffered a liver inflammattion before trhe 2004 Pacific League playoffs and didn't hit at all, allowing Seibu to get to the Japan Series. Became the first man in Japanese baseball history to drive in 120 runs three years in a row (9/28/2005 against Rakuten, with a two run homer). But Matsunaka didn't hit again in the playoffs and Lotte went to the Japan Series. Started having knee and elbow problems in mid-season 2009, slowing him down offensively. Selected to nine all star teams (1999-2001, 2003-2005, 2007-2009). 1000th hit (7/30/2005 against Lotte at Fukuoka Dome in the sixth inning off of Dan Serafini, an RBI double). 1500th hit (5/6/2009 against Orix at Osaka Dome in the sixth inning off of Shogo Yamamoto, a single to center). 200th homer (4/17/2005 against Lotte at Fukuoka Dome off of Shunsuke Watanabe in the ninth inning, a solo jack to right, the 82nd man in history to that mark). 300th homer (8/29/2008 against Seibu at Fukuoka Dome in the third inning off of Hideaki Wakui, a two run jack to right). 1000th game (4/28/2006 against Nippon Ham at Sapporo Dome in a start at DH). 1000th RBI (4/3/2009 against Orix at Fukuoka Dome in the third inning off of Satoshi Komatsu). Married to wife Keiko, a former announcer for Shizuoka Broadcasting. Interestingly, plays golf righthanded, something he has in common with his boss, Sadaharu Oh.  Official Homepage   Reference:  Wikipedia Japan
