Biography: Was born a southpaw, but his father, who is a barber, had him begin throwing righthanded so that he could play more positions on the field. Started out playing softball in third grade. Played nanshiki ball in junior high, both pitching and playing shortstop. Was originally an outfielder, but became his high school team's ace as a senior. Played in two Koshien Tournaments.
