Biography: Started playing baseball in first grade. Was originally a pitcher in high school, but had elbow surgery his junior year and was converted into a position player, becoming his team's clarnup hitter and captain. Played in one Koshien Tournament (spring 1987).Became his college squad's cleanup hitter as a sophomore, winning two batting titles and being named to four circuit Best Nines. His 15 career homers is second all time in Tokyo Metropolitan University League history. Was named to a Japanese university all star nine that faced off against one from the U.S, again being slotted into the four hole. Drafted on the first round (1991). Set a new team record with his 14th pinch hit homer (8/18/2001 against Yomiuri at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium). Owns the Central League record for career pinch hit homers with 19, which is third all time overall for both leagues. Slugged his fourth pinch hit grand slam to tie a Japan record (10/11/2001against Yakult at Meiji Jingu Stadium). Had at least one pinch hit homer in each of eight straight years, a Japan record. Sold to Hanshin (11/5/2004).

Biography: Played third in high school while slugging 36 homers . Became an outfielder after joining Kokutetsu. Selected to three all star teams (1955, 1957, 1961). Is tied with Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Futoshi Nakanishi for most homers by a 21 year old (1955). Also holds record for most pro homers by a player from Nagano Prefecture. Biography: Started playing baseball in junior high. Played in three Koshien Tournaments. Was his team's captain and cleanup hitter his senior year. There's rather a famous story that Maeda was involved in as a high scholer: during his senior year, his school was down 1-0 against Tokaidai Number Two High at Fujisakidai Prefectural Stadium in s prefectural Koshien qualifying trounamennt final. The Tokaidai head coach had told his starter that it was okay to walk Maeda if he didn't want to pitch for him. So in the fourth, the pitcher served up two wide ones to begin what was supposed to be an intentional walk. So Maeda began  walking out to the mound and yelled at the pitcher, "what's the matter? You don't want to pitch to me?  C'mon you chicken, throw me a strike!" The plate umpire got in between the two and play resumed. The pitcher took the bait and threw a fastball on the inner half that Maeda launched into the rightcenterfield seats to tie the game up. Maeda's side won 3-2. Drafted on the fourth round (1989). Wanted to play with Daiei and was so devastated at not being taken by them he refused Hiroshima's offer initially before being talked into joining them. Daiei instead took Daisuike Motoki, who refused to sign and spent a season playing in Hawaii. The seconc rounder was a nobody who had a seven game career for the Hawks until thay picked Takehiro Hashimoto on the third round, but Hashimoto didn't blossom until after they traded him to Seibu. So not picking Maeda was an epic blunder by the then struggling Daiei franchise. Was arguably one of the best pure athletes to ever play pro baseball in Japan, but two Achilles tendon surgeries as well as other nagging injuries effectively ruined what should have been a hall of fame career, making him his country's answer to Eric Davis. In fact, during a comeback from another Achiles injury in 2002, he got into a dugout confrontation with first baseman Luis Lopez over Maeda taking it too easy on the basepaths over what Lopez felt should have been an RBI single back through the middle. Maeda stopped at third. Lopez was suspended and never regained his form. Then during spring training of 2005, was told that he would be consigned to a role player status due to his defense deteriorating. But then he went on a tear once the regular season started and is still hitting. Was asked frequently to be the Carp cleanup hitter, but didn't think he was cutout for it and balked at that opportunity. Not known as the warmest guy on the block thanks to a stoic manner, Maeda's teammates either love him or hate him with little in between. Even so, when Marty Brown began managing the team in 2006, he made Maeda the captain of the position players. Six hit game (9/19/1997 against Yomiuri). Homered in five straight games (8/6-8/11/1998). His 23 three hits or more games set a then Central League record (1998). 1000th game (7/22/1999 against Hanshin at Koshien Stadium in a start in rightfield). 1500th game (9/10/2004 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome in a start in leftield). 2000th game (10/7/2008 against Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium in a ninth inning pinch hitting appearacne). 100th homer (7/17/1997 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome in the first inning off of Katsuyoshi Murata, a two run jack to right). 200th homer (4/9/2004 against Yokohama at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in the third inning off of Pete Walker, a solo jack to right). 3000th total base (8/22/2006 against Hanshin at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium, a single to right in the fifth off of Kei Igawa, the 40th man to that mark). 1000th RBI (8/12/2007 against Yakult at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in the seventh inning on a pinch hit groundout to second, the 31st man to that mark).1000th hit (8/28/1998 against Yokohama at Yokohama Stadium in the seventh inning off of Hideyuki Awano, a two run double off the centerfield fence). 2000th hit (9/1/2007 against Chunichi at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in the eighth inning off of Yuichi Hisamoto, a two RBI single to right after he had been knocked down on a 1-0 high and tight heater). Selected to seven all star teams (1993-1994, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2007-2008). Married to wife Hidemi with two children. Hiromitsu Ochiai says that kids should emulate Maeda's batting style due to its simplicity. He also reportedly told Kosuke Fukudome and Masahiko Morino that the only hitter they would be allowed to emulate would be Maeda. However, it should be noted that Ochiai and Maeda are said to be very good friends. Ichiro is reportedly a big fan as well. His hobby is golf and has a one handicap. Biography: The last name he was born with was Izaki, but he was adopted into the Maeoka family in Wakayama Prefecture so that he could attend Shingu High. He formally changed his last name in 1959. Pitched a 13 inning no hitter in a prefectural tournament in 1955 and then tossed two more no-nos in a prefectural tourney the following year, ultimately surrendering just five total hits in five starts in the latter tourney. Played in three Koshien Tournaments (spring, summer 1954, summer 1955). Signed by Hanshin for 8 million yen, a big amount back them (1955). Converted to the outfield in 1961. Ran a sports resort after retirement.
