Biography: Was drafted into the Japanese Navy in 1944 and serv4d in both China and the South Pacific. His 143 runs scored, 161 RBIs and 376 total bases are Japanese records (1950). He was Japan's first 50+ homer man (1950). Played in one Japan Series and batted .174 (4-23, one double, four walks, three strikeouts) in six games with no homers and two RBIs (1950). Herniated a disk in his back due to an overly rigorous practice regimen and had to change his batting mechanics as a result, leading to a decline in his power numbers and average. 2000 Hiroshima fans contributed 500 yen apiece (at a time when the average Japanese office worker made about 6000 yen a year) to help the club acquire Kozuru and one other player. Hit almost exclusively in the cleanup slot with Hiroshima. 200th homer (9/23/1955 against Taiyo off of Masatoshi Kondo, third to that mark all time). Selected to three all star teams and batted.133 (2-15) with on homers and no RBIs in eight games (1951, 1953, 1956). Is the only Japanese 50 homer guy to not end up with at least 300 homers. Coached with Hanshin and Kokutetsu after retirement. Has also done scouting work. Currently works for a building management company. Has also gone under the name Makoto Iizuka.
