Biography: Is third generation Korean-Japanese. His Korean last name is Kim. Third Son of Akiyo Kinjo. Started playing baseball in seventh grade. Pitched from junior high through the industrial leagues. Was said to be clocked as high as 95mph. Played in one Koshien Tournament (1993). Played in a Korean high school tournament as part of a Korean-Japanese schoolboy all star team (1994). Drafted on the fifth round (1998). They put him on the infield soon after joining and turned him into a switch hitter despite the fact that he had never batted during his years in corporate ball, where they use the DH.. First true rookie to win a batting title in NPB history and his .346 average that year remains the highest of any switch hitter in Japanese history. Also impressed major league scouts during the November MLB-NPB all star series, where he played several different positions and hit .370. Was defensively erratic ont he infield, so he was moved to the outfield in 2001. His 43 sacrifices in 2001 is a team record. Homered from both sides of the plate in a game twice in 2003, a new Central League record. He has done it three times for his career thus far. His 191 hits in 2005 is third most all time for a switch hitter for a single season. Selected to Japan's 2006 WBC squad and showed off his strong arm to good effect. As an interestintg note, reportedly kept his options open about playing for Korea before he was picked for the Japanese side. Has rarely had a settled place in the batting order as Yokohama's managers have struggled to find some offensive consistency. Got off to a horrendous first month in 2007, but had a good second half to end up with a decent year. 1000th hit (6/3/2007 against Orix at Kobe Green Stadium in the second inning off of Yuki Tanaka, a single to right). 1000th game (7/28/2007 against Hanshin at Koshien Stadium). 1500th game (8/25/2011 against Hiroshima at Matsuda Stadium in a start in centerfield). Selected to three all star teams (2003, 2005-2006). Official Homepage   Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Studied judo in elementary school. However, there was no judo program at his junior high, so after comtemplating rugby, he joined the baseball team instead. Was a catcher in high school and played in two Koshien tournaments (1964). After signing with Hiroshima for a 10 million yen signing bonus, which he then used to go buy himself a Ford Galaxy, he was converted into a first baseman when he turned pro and then moved over to third in 1975 at the insistence of manager Joe Lutz.  Broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record in a game against Chunichi at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium on 6/13/1987. Ultimately, his 2215 consecutive games (10/19/1970 against Yomiuri-10/22/1987) played was A pro baseball world record until it was broken by Cal. Ripken. Also had a 678 game streak where he played in every inning of every game. Continued the consecutive games streak despite a hairline fracture in his shoulder after being struck by a pitch from Yomiuri hurler Takashi Nishimoto  (8/1979). Was given the Kokumin Eiyosho, or People's Honor Award, making him only the second man to receive it after Sadaharu Oh. Was hit twice in an inning to set a new record (8/31/1976 against Chunichi). His number 3 has been permanently retired.  Homered in five straight games (6/6/-6/10 1971). Homered three times in a game (9/13/1971). Ripped pinch hit grand slam (10/10/1973). Slugged first inning leadoff homers in back to back games (10/4-5/1977). Was thrown out in 12 consecutive steal attempts (1978). Connected for opening day grand slam (4/9/1983).  2000th hit (8/9/1983 against Hanshin to become the 16th man in history to that mark). He was fearless at the plate, preferring to dive in, and thus his 161 HBP is a Central League record and second all time. His 267 GIDP is a CL record. Blasted at least 20 homers or more 13 straight seasons and 16 in all. Selected to 13 all star teams (1971, 1974-1977, 1980-1987). Played in five Japan Series, batting .155 (18-116) with five hoimers and 8 RBIs in 34 total games, Hiroshima winning three championships  (1975, 1979-1980, 1984, 1986). Is second all time in strikeouts despite leading the league in that category just once and he never fanned 90 times in any one campaign. His 23 years in the league is a CL record. His 2677 games played is fourth all time while his 9404 at bats is third all time. He is fifth all time in both hits and runs scored in addition to total bases. His 504 homers is sixth all time. Has been working as a tv baseball commentator since 1994 for TBS. And the Galaxy? He got into an accident and the club had him surrender his driver's license. Homered in final game (10/22/1987).

Was only the sixth man to connect for a come from behind pinch hit walkoff grand slam but the first to do it to clinch a pennant (9/26/2001 against Orix at Osaka Dome to leftcenter off of Masanobu Okubo in a 6-5 final).  Hit a sayonara knock, the first of his life, on his 29th birthday.  He then batted .500 in the Japan Series that year. Injured himself in spring training of 2002 and missed most of the season. Converted into an infielder in 2004. Had shoulder surgery in 2006 to end his season after attempting a diving catch. Missed the first month of the 2008 season with a muscle pull. 1000th game (8/6/2009 against Rakuten at Osaka Dome in a start at third base). 100th homer (9/11/2010 against Rakuten at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium in the ninth inning off of Shinichiro Koyama, a solo jack to left). 1000th hit (9/21/2010 against Nippon Ham at Sapporo Dome in the ninth inning off of Hisashi Takeda, an RBI single to center).
