Biography: Started playing baseball in fourth grade with a local youth league team. Was his high school team's cleanup hitter, slugging 70 homers during his schoolboy career. Sai he was going to go to Komazawa University, but he was drafted anyway at the behest of general manager Rikuo Nemoto, angering Komazawa's jhead coach, who said that he would never allow any of his players to join the Hawks ever. The two sides later made nice. Drafted on the first round (1994). Catching coach Mitsuo Tatsukawa, a former backstop with Hiroshima, said that he had never see such a bad catcher in his life because he couldn't handle balls in the dirt back then and Johjima spent most of his first two years in the minors. Slugged two grand slams in a Western League game in consecutive at bats, only the second man in history to do that (7/4/1996 against Hanshin's affiliate at Naruohama). Also set a circuit records with 25 homers while also taking the RBI crown with 63 that same season. Became the youngest catcher ever at 21 years and 45 days to be voted in by the fans as an all star starter. Suffered from a broken hand in 2000, but came back and slugged four homers in the Japan Series. Part of the first 30 homer quartet in Pacific League history (Tadahito Iguchi, Nobuhiko Matsunaka, Hiroki Kokubo and Johjima). It was also the first time that had occured in NPB history without a foreign player being involved somewhere. There is a museum in his honor in Sasebo that opened in 2001. Borke his collar bone in 2002. Came back in 2003 to catch every inning of every game, becoming just the first man to do that since Katsuya Nomura. Homered twice in an inning to tie a record (4/13/2001). Had six hits in a game (7/27/2003 against Orix). All of his 34 homers in 2003 were off of righthanders. So he then homered in game one of the Japan Series off of lefthander Kei Igawa. His 22 HBP in 2004 was a then Pacific League record, eclipsing Ichiro Suzuki's old mark of 18. Became part of the only 100 RBI quartet in Japanese history (Matsunaka, Iguchi, Pedro Valdez and Johjima) in 2003. Played in the Athens Olympic Games, taking home a bronze (2004). Set a new Pacific League record for batting average by a catcher in 2004. 1000th hit (6/1/2004, tying for fastest ever to that mark by a catcher). 100th homer (5/6/2002 against Kintetsu off of Katsuhiko Maekawa). 200th homer (6/2/2005 against Hanshin off of Kyuji Fujikawa). Fractured a shin by fouling a ball off of it, causing him to miss the last month of the regular season and all of the post season (2005). 200th homer (6/4/2005). Qualified for free agency and signed with Seattle during the 2005 offseason. Selected to eight all star teams (1997-2001, 2003-2005). Decided to opt out of the remaining time on his Mariners contract during the 2009 offseason and signed a four year, $20 million deal with Hanshin. Married to wife Maki Ofuji, who was known mainly for starring in a lot of commercials that were aired in Johjima's native Kyushu. They have three kids together. His hobby is fishing.
