Biography: Played third up until his last year of high school, when he was converted into a pitcher. However, due to averaging almost 400 innings in each of his first two years with the Dragons, his arm went dead and he was converted back to the infield in 1965. That didn't really work out and he attempted to take the mound again in 1968, with less than satisfactory results and he retired. As a result, when he himself became a manager, he babied his pitchers. He guided Yokohama to only its second pennant and Japan Series championship in 1998. Selected to three all star teams (1961-1963).

Biography: Played both baseball and rugby in junior high, playng on a prefectural champion rugby squad. Was his high school team's ace and cleanup hitter. Played in one Koshien Tournament. After graduating high school, went to Hosei University, but dropped out almost immediately after school started. He then played in the industrial leagues beginning that August. Biography: Began playing baseball in fourth grade. Played in three Koshien Tournaments (spring, summer 1939, spring 1941). Batted cleanup and was team captain in college. Banged out eight hits in consecutive at bats (1950). Had a then record streak of 25 consecutive total bases.
