Biography: Started playing baseball at age four. Played short in junior high. Picthed and played the outfield in high school. Played in one Koshien Tournament. Was team captain in college. Drafted on the sixth round (2004). Selected to a minor league all star team his first season of pro ball and would lead the Western League in hitting, OBP, runs scored and steals. He then won the same circcuit's OBP and batting  crowns in 2006. He fell to .246 in 2007, but still won the steals title. Went to Hiroshima as a compensation pick for the Tigers signing Takahiro Arai. Was apparently left off the protected list because of what Hanshin management saw as his tendency to be overaggressive on the basepaths and being somewhat injury prone. First player ever to make his first two pro homers first inning leadoff jacks in consecutive games against the same opponent. Also became first player since 1990 to crack his first career dinger in a game and then go yard in the two succeeding matches. Has blazing speed. Hall of famer Yutaka Fukumoto believes that Akamatsu is a better outfielder than Ichiro because of his ability to read the ball and get good jumps. That ability has now made him world famous for a homer robbing grab where he climbed on top of the leftcenterfield wall after a long run to bakchand a drive off the bat of Bay Stars third baseman Shuichi Murata. Some American sportswriters called it the best outfield play ever. (8/4/2010 against Yokohama at Matsuda Stadium off of Yuki Saito  Video). Selected to one all star team (2009). Married to wife Hiroko. Reference: Wikipedia Japan    Official Homepage

Biography: Born Ginji Ube, but got his current last name when his mom remarried. Started playing baseball in second grade due to the influence of his grandfather and then joined a local youth team a year later. His grandfather managed that team when Ginji was in fifth and sixth grade and had him begin to hit lefthanded. Slugged 24 homers during high school, where he played left, third and catcher. Drafted on the third round (2005). Has hit decently well in the minors, including winning the Eastern League batting championship in 2010, while playing three different positions, but is now seen as an infielder. Reportedly runs and throws well and hits to all fields. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Born to parents who were both track aand field athletes at one time. Signed outside the draft as a pitcher (1980). Ironically, his high school had been kept from advancing to the Koshien Tournament when Tsutomu Itoh of Kumamoto Kogyo High took him deep for a two run homer in the final of a prefectural tourney. Itoh would go on to be Seibu's starting backstop and thus Akiyama's teammate. He was converted into a third baseman before being sent to the outfield in 1987. Was sent to the Astros instructional league team for some training (1983). Won am Eastern League homer title with 13 dingers (1982). Suffered a fracture (1984). Attained rare combination of a .300 average, 30 homers and 30 steals, the fifth person in history to do that (1989). Had a nine game RBI streak (5/17-30 1985). Really drew public attention when he did a back flip to home plate in the eighth game of the 1986 Japan Series after connecting for a two run homer in the sixth inning. Became seventh man in Japanese history to crack 40 homers in three consecutive seasons (1985-1987). Became second man in history to ring up 40 homers and 30 steals in the same season (1987). His nine straight 30 homer campaigns is second all time to Sadaharu Oh's 19. He is the first player in history to have won both a steals and homer title. He is ninth in history to hammer 100 homers for two different teams. Belted a grand slam in pennant clinching game (9/23/1990 against Nippon Ham at Seibu Stadium). Traded to Daiei in a three on three deal that saw Makoto Sasaki go to Seibu (1994). Also owns the all time record for strikeouts with 1712. His 15 Japan Series homers is third all time and his 53 strikeouts in such series is first all time. Named Japan Series MVP twice (1991, 1999). Selected to 18 all star teams (1985-2002). Was named all star MVP (game one, 1994). 2000th hit (8/18/2000 against the Chiba Lotte Marines off of Tomohiro Kuroki, a single to left, at Kita-Kyushu Stadium in the fifth inning). Was first ever to mash 30 homers and steal 50 bases in the same season (1990). Had an 833 consecutive games played streak, 11th all time (4/6/1985-6/16/1991). Had two five game homer streaks (5/19-26.1985; 5/4-9/1991). Spanked game inning hits in a Japan record five consecutive games (5/16-22/1987). First player ever with six consecutive seasons of 30 homers and at least 20 steals. Had grand slams in consecutive games to become only the third person in history to do that  (8/21-22/1993 against Nippon Ham in the first off of Yasumitsu Shibata and third off of Yasukatsu Shirai respectively). Had a record 11 game streak with at least one extra base hit in each (9/17-10/7/1994). Was just the second man in history to attain 400 homers and 300 steals, the other being hall of famer Isao Harimoto. He is the first player in history to exceed both 2000 hits and 2000 games. Struckout five times in a game (5/27/1995 against Kintetsu in an extra inning contest). 200th homer (4/19/1990 against Lotte at Seibu Stadium off of Satoru Komiyama). 300th homer (4/11/1993 against Daiei off of Kenichi Wakatabe at Seibu Stadium in his 1085th game, second fastest to that mark in history). 400th homer (6/16/1998 against Orix at Kobe Green Stadium off of Masao Kida in his 1731st game, sixth fastest to 400 in history). From 1994, began having back and knee problems that dogged him until the end of his career. He had surgery to repair a herniated disk after the 2001 season. Was also hit in the face by an 89mph Daisuke Matsuzaka fastball that fractured a cheek bone, but he was back in action a week later while wearing a face gaurd (9/8/1999). Daiei went on to its first pennant in 26 years that season and Akiyama opened the Japan Series with a first inning leadoff homer.  He homered in game two and then made a great defensive play, colliding with the rightfield wall while making a running catch and then throwing to first to catch the retreating runner for a double play in game three to earn the MVP. He then celebrated all that by drilling a first inning leadoff homer opening day of 2000 off of Kuroki. In all, he played in nine Japan Series (1985-1988, 1993, 1999). His 15 series dingers are third most in history behind Sadaharu Oh and Shigeo Nagashima. Altogether, he hit .238 (56-235) in 61 series games with seven doubles, 34 RBIs and 34 runs scored while stealing six bases. He is the only man ever to win Japan Series MVPs for two different teams. Generally considered the first true five tool player in Japanese history and he garnered a lot of praise from MLB officials and scouts for his ability. Was so popular that he was feted by both his old team as well as Daiei during his retirement game. Is married and has a daughter. Owns all time records for games played, hits, homers, and RBIs by a non-drafted player. The combination of Akiyama, Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Orestes Destrade cracked 114 homers between them one season, a PL record for any three players the same year in a team's lineup (1990). He and Ty VanBurkelo homered in the same game 14 times, the most in Pacific League history for any two hitters in one team's lineup for a season (1988). Batted .387 with the bases loaded lifetime (41-106). Is only non-drafted player since the draft was enacted to attain 2000 hits. Now works as a baseball commentator for RKB, a Mainichi outlet. 1000TH RBI (4/7/1996 against at Fukuoka Dome off of Fumiya Nishiguchi, the 23rd man to that mark). 1000th run scored (8/15/1996 against Nippon Ham at Tokyo Dome, the 28th man to that mark). 2000th Hit (8/18/2000 against Lotte at Kita Kyushu Stadium in the fifth inning off of Tomohiro Kuroki, the 28th man to that mark).
