Biography: Was his team's ace in high school. Played in two Koshien Tournament (spring 1982, summer 1983). Drafted on the second round (1983). Traded to Yakult in March, 1995. Selected to five all star teams (1988, 1995-1997, 2006). Was signed by the Mets in 1997 as a free agent, the first official Japanese free agent to ever go to MLB. He went to Colorado and then Montreal, winning a total of 32 big league games before signing with Orix. Trivia: he was the first Japanese to ever steal a base in a regular season MLB game (6/24/2000 against Arizona). Had his shoulder operated on in 2002. Started for Orix on Opening Day 2003, but would have left ankle surgery in August to end his season. Was released at the end of the 2004 campaign, but then following the merger with Kintetsu he was re-signed at the urging of manager Akira Ogi, winning his first six decisions of 2005. Gave up two grand slams in an inning, the first time ever in Pacific League history that had ever occurred and just the second time overall in NPB annals (4/1/2007 against Rakuten at Miyagi Prefectural Stadium, the victimizers being Jose Fernandez and Takeshi Yamasaki). In 2007, he was demoted to the bullpen and asked to be traded, and he was in June to Lotte, who he didn't do much for and he was released at the end of the 2007 schedule anbd, after initially hoping to find a job as a pitcher anywhere, decided to retire and become a minor league pitching coach with Nippon Ham. Is one of five men in NPB history to win games against 12 different teams (he never beat his old team, Kintetsu, though). Fastball, curve, forkball. Hobbies are playing guitar and horse racing.
