Biography: Was hampered by a circulatory problem  in his throwing arm and it limited him to one victory in college. Was clocked in excess of 93mph in the industrial leagues. Drafted on the first round (1989). Had elbow problems early into his pro career and often used pain killers to pitch through them. Got punched by Yokohama outfielder Glenn Braggs after throwing behind him. Both men were ultimately ejected (6/22/1994). Traded to Lotte in June, 1996 and was released after the 1997 season ended and picked up by Nippon Ham.  Signed with Hanshin before the 2000 season and retired following the end of the schedule. Selected to two all star teams (1990, 1992). Became a baseball commentator for NHK and Tokyo Chunichi Sports after retirement. Biography: Started playing baseball in first grade. Played in Senior League in junior high. Was a reliever in high school. Played in two Koshien Tournaments. Drafted on the third round (1995). Traded to Nippon Ham during the 2003 offseason. Released after the 2006 season and re-signed by Yokohama. Hurt his elbow in 2007, but pitched through it. Hurt the elbow again in 2009 and was sent down in July never to return as the elbow condition worsened to where he couldn't throw and he retired to becokme an advance scout with the team. Biography: Competed in the long jump in junio high. Reportedly ran ten kilometer radiuses for conditioning beginning in elementary school. Was originally a catcher, but was converted into a pitcher in high school. Joined Hankyu in 1956 after turning down enthusiastic overtures from the Osaka Tigers. Slugged  a grand slam in his fourth pro at bat,. the shortest to that feat in Japanese history at the time (4/11/1956 against Takahashi). His 33 homers as a pitcher is second all time. Went to Hanshin in mid-season, 1975. They released him at the end of the 1976 campaign and he was picked up by Kintetsu. Selected to 14 all star teams (1956, 1958-1960, 1962-1964, 1966-1971, 1973). Had  22 walkless complete games. Became a baseball commentator for Mainichi Broadcasting after retirement before coaching with Hanshin. He returened to baseball commentatary, but for Kansai TV and  Nikkan Sports before Orix gave him a coaching position. He subesequently moved on over to Kintetsu after that. His 949 appearances is first all time. His 350 victories is second all time and most ever for a righthander. His 3388 strikeouts is second all time, as are his 5130 innings pitched. His 11 shutouts in 1958 is a Pacific League record, as are his 23 career balks, his 340 wins while in the circuit, his three straight games with a shutout, and his 280 lifeitme losses in the PL and his 1430 walks. In addition, his 4561 hits given up is an all time record (4433 in the PL, a league record). His 1940 runs given up is also a Japan record..His 19 straight years with at least ten wins remains a pro yakyu standard. His nicknames are due to his stamina, part of that being being able to really hold his liquor. He is the only pitcher ever to have both a walkoff bomb and a grannt during his career.
