Biography: Started out playing nanshiki ball in first grade with a local youth team. His catcher on that team was future Yomiuri Giants shortstop Hayato Sakamoto. Played Boys League in junior high. Was his high school team's ace and garnered attention on both sides of the Pacific his junior year, being clocked in the high 80's with a good vertical slider and forkball, leading his squad to a Koshien summer title. In that tourney, he also became the first junior ever to be clocked at 93mph in that tourney. He was selected to Japan's national amateur baseball team, becoming only one of two high school juniors ever to do that (the other is Chunichi infielder Naomichi Donoue). Was named captain beginning the fall season that same year. His senior year, he pitched Komadai Tomakomai into amother summer Koshien berth, where he ran up against Waseda Jitsugyo Handkerchief Prince Yuki Saito in the final, battling him to a 1-1 15 inning deadlock. That necessitated a replay the next day, as he came on in relif in the first inning, but they would ultimately fall to Saito, who again went all the way. He was selected to Japan's national high school all star team and played one from the U.S., MLB scouts wanting to sign him, but he wasn't interested in playing in the U.S. because of food and language issues. In the meantime, he had broken Daisuke Matsuzaka's high school strikeouts record, fanning a total of 458 while also clubbing `13 homers for his schoolboy career. Drafted on the first round (2006). The Golden Eagles pitching coach corrected the tendency Tanaka had in high school to have his back hip bail toward first base, greatly incresing the command of his slider. However, he got hammered in his regular season pro debut, lasting just 1.2 innings and surrendering six runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in a no decision. Won five of his six starts against Softbank that season. Selected to Japan's olympic baseball team at Peking, rendering the opposition, including Cuba, scoreless (2008). In 2009, was picked for Japan's WBC squad, acquitting himself pretty well, and then starting on Opening Day in a win. He would rack up complete games in each of his first four starts, the first man to do that since 1993 (Satoru Komiyama and Shigetoshi Hasegawa). He also opened that campaign with seven consecutive victories. But due to a lack of run support, he would also go two months without a win at one stretch before going 4-0 in August with a 1.44 ERA. In 2010, pulled a quad muscle in July and was out a month and then suffered a pectoral tear at the end of August and was out for the remainder of the schedule. Selected to three all star teams (2007-2009). Fastball clocked as high as 96mph with that vertcial slider, curve, changeup and forkball. Has problems holding runners on, though and is owned by the Seibu Lions (2-8). Married to former idol singer Mai Satoda  Official Homepage  Reference:  Wikipedia Japan
