Biography: Started playing baseball in first grade. Played in one Koshien Tournament (summer 1993). Is one of only three players ever to put down a sac bunt four times in a summer Koshien match. Became his collge team's ace, ultimately going 17-11 in 60 games  with an ERA of 2.58 for his career there. Named to Japan's national collegiate all star squad. Pitched his industrial league club toa national title in 1999. Drafted on the first round (1999). Was the first Giants rookie hurler to win his first career start since Tsuneo Horiuchi. Became the first rookie ever to throw a shutout in his first Japan Series appearance (game five 2000). Took a lot of grief from his kindergarten teacher wife as well as then Seibu manager Haruki Ihara for a stunt at a penant celebration party in 2002 whereby he dressed in nothing but a leopard print thong. He said he could understand the crap he caught from the wife, but another team's manager pissed him off. Had injury problems in 2003-2004. During the 2004 offseason, was part of an NPB all star contingent that faced off against one from MLB. He gave up three straight tape measure jacks to Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield and another player in his first start against them, but then came back later in the series to toss five hitless innings at that MLB nine in a start thanks to being able to command the outside corner. Was hit in the face by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout off the bat Yakult centerfielder Norichika Aoki and suffered a fractured cheekbone, putting him out of action for a while (4/5/2006 at Meiji Jingu Stadium). Was the first Giants southpaw to win five gams in a month since Hisao Niura, who did it in May, 1979, when he did it in April, 2007. But he also went through a six week period where he didn't win a game that year. His father would also pass away duriing that time. Selected to one all star game (2007). Started on Opening Day of 2008, but lost 6-2. Won five straight decisions in the last month or so of the 2009 campaign to help his team seal the pennant. Signed with the Mets during the 2009 offseason as a free agent. 1000th inning (9/9/2007 against Hanshin at Tokyo Dome). 1000th strikeout (8/16/2009 against Hanshin at Tokyo Dome in the fourth inning off of Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi). Fastball in the high 80's with s sinker, slider, curve, shuuto and forkball. He lives on the outside corner. Is married with a child.   Official Blog   Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball in fourth grade. Played nanshiki ball in both elementary and junior high school, pitching in both places. Converted from an outfielder to a pitcher his senior year in college. Clubbed 17 homers during his collegiate career. Drafted on the fourth round (1994). Threw a no hitter in the Western League 7/28/(1996). Spun a 173 pitch 1-0 shutout against Yomiuri (8/28/2002). Won eight straight decisions to begin the 2003 campaign and then faltered after that, winning just one game during the second half. Qualified for free agency in 2004 and there was reportedly interest from Toronto, but he chose to stay with the Carp. Hurt a knee in 2005 and has his worst season, eventually requiring season ending surgery in August. In 2008, became the oldest pitcher to ever be voted on to the all star team by the fans at 39 years and two months. Decided to head to MLB as a free agent that offseason and injured his calf while in Toronto's spring camp and was let go, whereupon he was picked up by the Mets and became the third oldest man in post WWII MLB annals to make his debut at 40.  He had okay stats in New York, but they decided not to hold on to him and he returned to Hiroshima for 2010. Became the first 40 year old to win a game on back to back days in NPB history (4/16-17/2010 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome). Owns the Dragons, but didn't even win a game against Hanshin at Koshien Stadium until 2004. Selected to four all star teams (2000-2001, 2003, 2008). 1000th inning (8/20/2003 against Yakult at Hiroshima Municipal Stadium in the first inning). 1000th strikeout (5/9/2008 against Yakult at Meiji Jingu Stsdium in the second inning off of Kyohei Muranaka). Fastball clocked as high as 93mph but usualy in the high 80's with a shuuto. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan
