With an eye to one day running a high school baseball program, he took a year off to study for the entrance exam to Tsukuba University and was converted into a pitcher, becoming his team's ace as a junior. Threw a no hitter and earned a reputation as a strikeout artist, blowing away 246 hitters and going 18-11 with a 2.42 ERA for his college career and leading his squad to a Tokyo Metropolitan University League title. Drafted on the first round, becoming the first ever from a nationally run university to be so honored (1996). Traded to Yokohama during the 2000 offseason. Released at the conclusion of the 2003 schedule and picked up by Yakult. Became a high school science teacher and baseball coach after retirement. Is married to soccer writer Toka Saito. Biography: Started playing baseball in fourth grade. Played first base in high school and was his team's cleanup hitter. Drafted in December, 1944 and sent to Manchuria, where he reportedly strengthened his formerly weak shoulder by practicing throwing hand grenades, even winning a grenade throwing contest against other squads. After the war ended, he played in the industrial leagues before he was invited to play at Meiji University, where he became a pitcher. . Had large hands and was said to have been large elsewhere, too (think Milton Berle). Learned the forkball from his college head coach, Shunichi Amachi, who had reportedly learned it from Yankees great Herb Pennock in 1923. He then signed with Chunichi in 1949. 11 of his 32 wins in 1954 were against Yomiuri (as were five of his losses). He is the only man in history to have racked up at least ten wins against the Giants in one campaign. He also appeared five times in the Japan Series that year, tossing four complete games and garnering the MVP. Had 18 walkless complete games lifetime. No hitter (5/10/1955 against Kokutetsu). The opposing pitcher in that game, Masaichi Kaneda, would later spin a 1-0 perfect game against the Dragons with Sugishita on the hill (8/21/1957 at Chunichi Stadium). Considered the father of the forkball in the Japanese pros, but only threw it in critical situations. It was also often said to come out of his hand with no spin on it, Yomiuri hall of famer Tetsuharu Kawakami saying he could see the seams clearly on it when he threw it. The losing pitcher in his 200th career victory was the future pro wrestler Giant Baba. Selected to six all star teams (1951-1956). Was a pitching coach with Hanshin, Yomiuri and Seibu after retirement. Presently works as a baseball commentator for TBS. 100th win (4/25/1953, the 15th to that mark). 200th win (10/23/1957 against Yomiuri at Korakuen Stadium, the seventh to that mark). 1000th strikeout (10/10/1954, the 11th to that mark). Fastball, curve, forkball. Is said to resemble silent movie actor and comedian Minoru Takase and he was reportedly approached by talent scouts because of it. Sugishita is all the last manager from the 1950's still alive. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: His parents divorced just before he was born and he lived with his mother, younger sister and grandmother exclusively since then. Born a righthander but became a southpaw because his mom liked lefthanded guys, or so that's the story anyway. Raised mostly in Onojo, Fukuoka Prefecture. Started playing baseball in third grade with a local youth team and became a pitcher in sixth grade. Played in a local youth league in junior high as his team's ace and taking his squad to a national tournament final before losing. Played in three Koshien Tournaments. His senior year, he threw a no hitter against Hachinohe Kodai Number One High School on his mom's birthday in that tourney striking out 16 (8/11/1998 4-0) but was beaten in the next match by Daisuke Matsuzaka and Yokohama High. Hurt his shoulder in the industrial leagues, but rehabbed it back to health. Played in the Sydney Olympics,, holding Cuba scoreless for five innings in a start. But against the U.S. came on in relief in extra innings and spun two sclreless frams before a two run homer beat him in his third ining of work, the 13th (2000). His final season in the industrial leagues, lead his squad to a national title. Drafted on the third round (2001). Named MVP of the Japan Series after winning two games (2003). Kind of got lost in the shuffle publicitywise due to all the hubub over number one draft choice Hayato Terahara, a guy the Dodgers put a full court press on trying to sign, but while Terahara has floundered, Sugiuchi, who couldn't do much right at all his debut season, but has really blossomed since. However, in 2004, in one of the more examples of ballplayer stupidity, after being shelled in a game against Lotte at Chiba Marine Stadium for seven runs and was taken out, he pounded both hands on the dugout bench and broke the pinky fingers of each, putting him out of commission for months (6/1/2004 against Lotte). First Hawks pitcher since hall of famer Tadashi Sugiura to strikeout more than 200 hitters in a season. Is the first lefty in Pacific League history to win the Sawamura Award. Selected to Japan's 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic contingents as well as its 2008 olympic team at Peking. Lead NPB in K/9 in 2008. Became the first lefthander in NPB history to fan ten or more in five consecutive games and the first man since Hideo Nomo in 1993  to do that (2009). Is the first man to win six games in a month since hall of famer Keishi Suzuki in 1968 when he did it in April, 2010. 1000th strikeiout (4/5/2009 against Orix at Fukuoka Dome in the fourth inning). 1000th IP (4/26/2009 against Rakuten at Fukuoka Dome). 15 strikeout game (8/23/2009 against Nippon Ham at Fukuoka Dome; also has a 14 and a 13 strikeout outing). Has struckout at least one man in each inning twice (8/20/2005 against Seibu at Fukuoka Dome in a nine inning CG and 10/1/2008 against Orix at Osaka Dome in an eight inning CG). Four strikeouts in an inning (4/14/2003 against Lotte at Chiba Marine Stadium in the eighth inning, the ninth man ever to do that). Has won each of his last 14 May decisions.. Four of his 2010 shutouts were against Nippon Ham, making him the first man to do that against one team in a single season since Masaki Saito and 1995 and the first Pacific Leaguer since Keishi Suzuki in 1978. Selected to five all star teams (2005, 2007-2010). Ha been clocked as high as 93mph with a slider, curve and circle change. His 9.47 K/9 is the highest among active pitchers. Has not won a game at Rakuten's home ballpark since 2006. Married to wife Erika Ueba, a former Hawks tv program announcer, and has a son. Her younger sister is married to teammate Nagisa Arakaki. Hobbies are fishing and golf. Reference: Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball in second grade. As an eighth grader in Boys League, he was selected to play on an all star team that toured the U.S. Was something of a juvenile delinquent and dropped out of high school in 11th grade and went to play in Salinas in 1992. Was subsequently signed by Seattle. Was the third Japanese to play major league baseball. Played with the Mets, Kansas City, Colorado, and Milwaukee. Drafted on the second round (2002). Released at the end of the 2005 season. Invited to sporing training by Oakland in 2005, but didn';t fare well. He then migrated that same year to Tijuana of the Mexican League, where he made the all star team. He was then picked up by the Cubs. However, he was back in the Mexican League in 2007 with Tabasco. At the end of their season, he ended up with La New of the CPBL, becoming their closer. He later tried out for Rakuten and didn't make the cut. He opted for the Venezuelan Winter League before rejoining LaNew, who released him in May, 2008, whereupon he hooked up with Chihuahua of the Mexican League. At the conclusion of their season, he went to the Golden Baseball League with Calgary. When their schedule was played out, he decided to return to Mexico with Materos as their closer, posting good numbers there. Following a stint in the Dominican Winter League, he toiled against for Calgary in 2009 as their closer. Once their season was out, he sdlid on over to the Atlantic League with Southern Maryland. Was a player-anager for Kobe in the independent Kansai League in 2011 before he was cut loose at the end of that campaign. . Reference: Wikipedia Japan
