Biography: Members of Japan's Korean community believe that he is one of them and one rumor has him having undergone naturalization in 2003, but the documentation on all this is hazy at best. Was introduced to baseball by his older brother and started out playing nanshiki ball in first grade. Was a Yomiuri fan growing up despite being from Hanshin territory and his favorite player was Giants first baseman Kiyoshi Nakahata. Played Boys League in junior high, becoming a pitcher in ninth grade. Became his high school's ace as a junior. Drafted on the first round (1995). Experienced shoulder problems soon aftrer joining Daiei and coaches considered turning him into a position player, even being stationed in left in some minor league games, but he wanted to stick with pitching. Had shoulder surgery in 1998. Had more shoulder problems in 2001. Started on Opening Day in 2003 and was in a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the first and struckout the side to get out of it and was pretty much unhittable since. Won 16 straight that season to set a pro yakyu record and become the first 20 game winner in the Pacific League since 1985 (4/26-8/27/2003). Also became the first man ever to tie for the ERA title when he did so with Daisuke Matsuzaka that season. Started on Opening Day again in 2004 and came out of the gate slowly, really getting hammered hard most of the first half, even spending five weeks in the minors at one point. and then followed that up with a second half that was almost as bad. His 6.26 ERA is the highest ever for a pitcher qualifying for the ERA title. Began the 2005 season on the shelf due to shoulder pain and then ripped off 15 straight wins once he came back. He thus became the only pitcher ever to have two winning streaks of 14 games or more in a career. Ended up winning 15 games in his first 15 starts that season, also a record. Became the first pitcher since 1981 to win his first 15 decisions of a season. Had to change his windup beginning with the 2006 season when NPB adopted international pitching rules. Started on Opening Day and won. Has beaten all of the six Central League teams in interleague play. Lost a no hitter on an infield hit and ended up with a one hit shutout. He then picked the runner, Ryota Wakiya, off of first and ultimately faced the minimum 27 hitters (6/8/2006 against Yomiuri at Fukuoka Dome). He and Hiroshima ace Hiroki Kuroda both finished with ERAs under 2.00, the first time that has happened in both leagues the same year since 1969. Was the losing pitcher in perhaps the best playoff game in Japanese history when Daisuke Matsuzaka took a 1-0 victory from him (10/7/2006). He then suffered another 1-0 defeat against Nippon Ham in the bottom of the ninth for the league title (10/12/2006). A devastated Saito was carried off the mound by teammates Julio Zuleta and Jolbert Cabrera and he blamed himself for the Hawks not making it to the Japan Series. Lead in first place MVP votes but was bested by Nippon Ham first baseman Michihiro Ogssawara on total points. Is the first Pacific League pitcher ever with two Sawamura Award citations to his credit. Repetoire: fastball that has been clocked as high as 95 but is usually 91-94mph with a vertical slider, a curve ball, a tremendous forkball that is said to top out at 90mph, a cutter and a changeup. Since Kenji Johjima left, Naoki Matoba became his personal catcher. Had shoulder surgery in Januray, 2008 and missed the entire 2008 and 2009 campaigns. Had another procedure in Februaru, 2010 and was out for that season, too, and was ultimately released. Became a taxi squad coach, but is hoping to make a comeback himself by working out in the meantime. Selected to two all star teams (2003, 2006). Says the greatest moment of his baseball life was when Daiei won the Japan Series in 2003. Is a computer hobbyist. His favorite food is curry and his favorite celebrity is Aya Kamedo. Went through a nasty divorce with his wife amid allegations that he was unfaithful.. Reference: Wikipedia Japan     Official Homepage

Biography: Raisked mostly in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture. Batted cleanup for his high school team in addition to pitching. Drafted on the first round (1982). Became a sidearmer soon after. Was the first ever Central League pitcher to lead the circuit in wins five times and ERA three times. Started on Opening Day six times, twirling shutouts in three of them between 1994 and 1996, the only man ever to fashion so many straight whiteashes on the first day of the regular season. Had 18 walkless complete games lifetime. Holds the Japan record for most consecutive complete game wins with 11 (5/10/-7/15/1989). During that run, also tosseed three consecutive shutouts.  Is the last pitcher in NPB history to ring up back to back 20 win campaigns. By the way, his 20th win both those years came in his final start of the schedule. Had trouble with Hiroshima and was often held out from facing them. 100th win (4/30/1993 against Yakult at Tokyo Dome, the 105th man to that mark). 150th win (8/16/1996 against Yakult in a 179 pitch complete game ended on a walkoff jack from second baseman Toshihisa Nishi). 1000th strikeout (5/6/1994 against Chunichi at Tokyo Dome in the second off of Yasuaki Taiho, the 92nd man to that mark). His 11 seasons between Japan Series wins (1989, 2000) is the longest gap in NPB annals. He is also the only pitcher to give up a homer to the first man he faced in his first career start in Japan Series competition (1989). His three Sawamura Awards is an NPB record. His seven years leading the league in shutouts is also a Japan record. High 80's fastball with a curve. Selected to six all star teams (1989-1990, 1994-1996, 1998). Biography: Father played high school and industrial league ball and his older brother was Kiryu Number One High School's leadoff hitter. Started playing baseball in elementary school with a local youth team due to the influence of a manga called "Major." Played nanshiki ball in junior high. Lived with his older brother in Tokyo while attending high school, becoming his team's ace as a junior. Played in two Koshien Tourmanents (spring, summer 2006). In the summer tourney, made a name for himself for his habit of wiping his face every now and again with a handkerchief while showing tremendous poise under a lot of pressure, his legend culiminating in a complete game 15 inning tie against Komazawadai Tomakomai High and its vaunted ace, Masahiro Tanaka, ands then gong all the way again the following day for the title. He started every game his team played in that tournament, throwing 948 pitches in 69 innings, both Koshien records. and being on the hill for four straight days at one point. He also pitched his squad to the Kokutai Tournament title, besting Tanaka again in the final. Was named to Japan's national high school all star team and then announced he had no intention of turning pro out of high school, moving on to Waseda University to study sociology. He became the first freshman to win an  Opening Day starter for Waseda in spring action in 80 years. Lead the Tokyo Big Six University League in wins that season and was named to t6hat circuit's Best Nine and as its MVP. He then made starts on consecutive days in winning outings to get Waseda its first national collegiate title in three decades. He was picked to Japan's national collegiate all star aggregation and picked up a win in a start against a similar outfit from the U.S. He then started on Opening Day for his league's fall schedule and won that battle, becoming the first freshman to win both Tokyo Big Six University openers in one year since 1929 while also racking up ERA and wins titles and cadged another Best Nine nomination, making him the first freshman ever to get Best Nines in each season in a year in Tokyo Big Six annals. He notched another Best Nine and a wins title a year later. Was named team captain his senior year and he would be named to Japan's national collegiate all star club two more times. He would also become just one of four pitchers in Tokyo Big Six University League history to compile 30 career wins (he finished with 31) and 300 strikeouts. Drafted on the first round (2010). His debut start with Nippon Ham was broadcast live nationally by Asahi Television. Fastball that is in the high 80's (tops out at 93mph) witha slider, curve, cutter, a changeup with sinking action on it, and a forkball. His pitching style has been compared to Daisuke Araki's. In his regular season  pro debut, went five innings of four run (one earned) ball on three hits, but walked four while striking out only one but the Fighters tallied up eight runs to give the kid the win. Missed seven weeks of the 2011 campaign with an oblique pull. His hobby is fishing. Selected to one al star team (2011). Reference:  Wikipedia Japan
