Biography: Mother is White Russian and was an only child. Began playing baseball in elementary school. Began pitching as a seventh grader. Was his high school team's ace. Played in three Koshien Tournaments (summer, 1968, spring, summer 1969). In the final of the summer, 1969 tourney, went all the way in an 18 inning scoreless tie against Matsuyama Shogyo High School  and then came back the next day to go all nine in a 4-2 loss. Was a good looking kid, so was massively popular with female fans and that didn't decline very much early into his pro career. Drafted on the first round (1969). Because he was from northern Honshu, which has a cool comate, he had trouble adjusting to the midsummer heat of Osaka and had problems with athlete's foot as well. Sold to Yomiuri in 1983 and was released at the end of that season, whereupon he was picked up by Hanshin and then retired after the 1984 campaign concluded. Selected to seven all star teams (1970-1975, 1977). Had three walkless complete games lifetime. He was then signed by Hanshin, who let him go after the 1984 campaign. Became a baseball commentator with Mainichi Broadcasting after retirement. In 2009, became a supervisor for the new Japan Womean's Baseball League that opened play in 2010. Didn't get married until age 44 and that was to the head of his fan club. He has three children. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Became his high school team's ace his junior year. Drafted on the first round (2001). Had injuriy problems his first year of pro ball. Lead the Central League in K/9 in 2005. But he also became the first CL pitcher to surrender more than 100 runs in a season in 13 years. Had a perfect game with two outs in the eighth inning against Yokohama before it was broken up by s single to left from Seiichi Uchikawa (9/5/2006 at Nagasaki Big N Stadium). Started on Opening Day in a tie (2008). Acquired better command of his breaking stuff in 2009 for what has been his career year to date. Had a team record 43 consecutive inning streak where he didn't give up a run (4/28-5/31/2009). Hurt his shoulder during spring training of 2010 and was out until June and then reinjured it again toward the end of the month and that was his season. More ominously, he lost some zip on his fastball. His shoulder problems continued in 2011 as well and then suffered a fractured fin ger on a line drive back through the box. Clocked as high as 96mph with a curve, shuuto, forkball, changeup plus a  good pickoff move and is reportedly a very good fielder. Unfortunately, his control is still a work in progress. Selected to two all star teams (2008-2009). Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Parents  split when he was in ninth grade. Mother then died of intestinal cancer. Drafted on the second round (1996). Wanted number 11 with Kintetsu because he was a fan of Hideo Nomo. His 35 saves in 1998 was a then Pacific League record. Missed half the 1999 season with an injury. Posted after the end of the 2002 season, but there were no bids. Chunichi then posted him after the season ended and San Diego got him for $300,000. Was the closer for Japan's 2006 WBC championship team. Clocked as high as 96mph with a slider and forkball.
