Biography: Was the youngest of seven chilcren. His father, who ran a struggling freight transport company, died when he was two. Was scouted by former Nankai pitcher Nobukazu Iwamoto, who recommed that the Hawks sign him. Experienced a big cluture shock coming from rural Yamagata to bustling Osaka. Hurt his shoulder during the 1956 season, causing him to go from an overhand to a low angle submarined delivery ( video ) after being suggested to do so by pitching coach Susumu Yuki. Missed a no hitter when Tsuyoshi Oshita smacked a single to leadoff the game before Minagawa accumulated the next 27 outs without surrendering another knock for a one hit shutout (9/22/1968 against Toei). Had another one hitter, that coming against Hankyu on 6/3/1970. Won both ends of a doubleheader twice (8/7/1966 against the Tokyo Orions, 10/1/1968 against Hankyu). Racked up ten straight wins against the Orions (10/66-4/67). Started on Opening Day twice (1967-1968). Was hit on the righthand by a pitched ball during an exhibition game in 1969 and broke it, causing him to miss a big chunk of the schedule. Went 0-4 with three no decisions and a 3.72 ERA in four Japan Series (he didn't pitct at all in the 1965 series). Selected to six all star teams (1968, 1965-1968, 1970). Had 18 walkless complet games lifetime.Sinker, slider and excellent control marked by outstanding command of the corners. Owned hall of famer Futoshi Nakanishi. Was also the last man ever to win 30 games in a season and his 221 career wins is a Hawks team record, as are his 3158 IP and 759 appearances. The remarkable thing about that 31 win season was that he suffered a hairline knee fracture in a collision at home plate during the second half of the season, but he didn't want to be out of action during a heated pennant race and he and the team hid the injry from the press. Unfortunately, Nankai would finish one game behind Hankyu in the standings and he would lose the MVP to Braves ace Tetsuya Yoneda as a result. 100th win (9/8/1962 against Nishitetsu at Heiwadai Stadium, the 35th man to that mark). 200th win (10/6/1968 against Toei at Osaka Stadium, the 13th man to that mark). 1000th strikeout (6/17/1966 against Toei at Osaka Stadium off of Kesaharu Misawa, the 29th man to that mark). 1500th strikeout (5/9/1970, the 17th man to that mark). Coached for Yomiuri, Hanshin and Kintetsu after retirement. He didn't get along with Giants hurlers Tsuneo Horiuchi, Takashi Nishimoto or reliever Luis Sanchez (who told the press that he thought that Minagawa was stupid) and he was also blamed for wrecking onetime Kintetsu ace Hideyuki Awano's career by making him throw while he was still dealing with elbow problems. Has also done some baseball commentary for Asahi Broadcasting and TBS. . Is a mamber of the Meikyukai. Died of sepsis. It nonetheless bears noting that Minagawa was said to be a very nice and polite guy to fans, but his communication skills were apparently lacking as a coach. Was well liked by fans, too, for what he did in the broadcast booth. Had a ballpark named after him following his death in Yonezawa. Reference: Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Started playing baseball in third grade. Became his high school team's pitching ace his junior year. Won 32 games in college, including 24 straight league games. Drafted on the eighth round (2003). Got hit pretty hard in the minors. 92mph fastball with a slider out of a conventional delivery. Released after the 2006 season and signed on with the Golden Baseball League with the Calgary Vipers, where he went 10-5 with a 5.52 ERA IN 2007. He returned to Japan and failed to pass a couple of NPB tryouts and hooked up with the Ishikawa Million Stars of the Baseball Challenge League, where he went 15-5 with a 1.45 ERA in 27 games in 2008, notching the wins title. He followed that up with a 17 victory campaign in 2009 for another wins crown. However, NPB teams continue to not be interested. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: Sidearmer. Went from being an outfielder to a pitcer his first year of high school. Drafted on the seventh round (2003). Became the first pitcher fresh out of the amateur ranks to win Middle Reliver of the Year since 1990. .Was also the oldest man ever to win Rookie of the Year at 28 years and seven months. Throws in the high 80's with a slider, shuuto, cutter and forkball. Selected to one all star team (2004). Reference:  Wikipedia Japan

Biography: His family ran a flower delivery service. Was a Hanshin fan growing up. Started out playing baseball in third grade in Little League along with two younger brothers. Played Senior League ball in junior high. Became his high school team's ace his junior year. Drafted on the sixth round (1991). Then Hanshin coach Akinobu Okada was reportedly angered when the Tigers didn't draft Miura. Lost his first six decisions to begin the 1999 campaign and didn;'t register a victory until his 14th appearance. During the 2002 offseason, wa given a six year contract, the longest deal for a pitcher in NPB history. Selected to the Japanese olympic baseball team at Athens (2004). Had a team record 35 consecutive inning scoreless run (6/20-7/27/2007). Has lost each of his last seven Opening Day starts, a pro yakyu record (1999, 2002, 2004-2007, 2009). However, he pitched well in all of them except two. High 80's fastball, slow curver, slider, cutter and forkball. Is notorious for not getting a lot of run support (of Yokohama's seven ties in 2005, five of them were Miura starts, including one that ended 0-0). Once was pulled for a pinch hitter after throwing five no hit innings (5/29/1997 against Chunichi). Is 41-17 against Hanshin lifetime, but has had trouble against Yomiuri and Yakult. Reportedly got his nickname from former teammate Kenichi Yamazaki due to Miura's haircut that was inspired by his admiration for Elvis Presley. O a personal basis, is one of the most respected players in NPB. His younger brother Takeshi is an actor. Miura himself is a big pro wrestling fan. 100th win (5/9/2006 against Rakuten Yokohama Stadium in a start). 1000th inning (9/10/2000 against Hiroshima at Yokohama Stadium in the first inning). 1500th inning (6/19/2004 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome). 2000th inning (3/30/2007 against Yomiuri at Yokohama Stadium in the sixth inning). 2500th inning (9/21/2009 against Hanshin at Yokohama Stadium in the second inning). 1000th strikeout (9/10/2000 against Hiroshima at Yokohama Stadium in the first inning off of Akihiro Higashide). 1500th strikeout (6/18/2006 against Seibu at Seibu Dome in the sixth inning off of Kazuhiro Wada). 2000th strikeout (10/3/2009 against Chunichi at Yokohama Stadium in the fourth off of Takehiro Donoue).
