Biography: His father pitched a no hitter as part of a sandlot team the day before Kyuji was born. His older brother is the former GM of the Kochi Fighting Dogs of the Shikoku Island League. That event inpsired him to give Kyuji the kanji characters that mean something like, "baseball child." Started playing baseball in third grade with a local youth team. When he was in junior high, he and two friends saved a man who had fallen into a river. Played in one Koshien Tournament (summer 1997). His brother Junichi was his catcher and he struckout 18 in 14 innings in that tourney. He started the second game that his team played in that tourney and got beat 5-0 (summer 1997). Became his team's ace and cleanup hitter his senior year. Drafted on the first round (1998). Was injured during the 2001 season and reportedly considered retirement.  After injuring his shoulder during the 2004 season, one of the team's coaches had him make a change to how he used his back leg, which he was over-rotating, and he blossomed after it was suggested by another pitching coach that they make him into a reliever in 2005. His 80 appearances in 2005 set a then single season record and he was a linchpin to their drive to the pennant.  Had his manhood challeneged by Yomiuri slugger Kazuhiro Kiyohara, who complained about Fujikawa striking him out on a 3-2 forkball with the bases loaded and with an eight run lead. Kiyohara, who was sitting on 499 career homers at the time, thought Fujikawa, if he was a real man, should have thrown a fastball in that situation (4/21/2005). The next time Fujikawa faced Kiyohara, he sturk himout on a mid-90's heater. Named to Japan's WBC team. His fastball was described as "electric" by Alex Rodriguez after A-Rod slapped a seeing eye grounder for a game winner in the U.S.' controversial victory over Japan. Became Hanshin's closer in June, 2006 and went 38 consecutive appearances and 47.1 straight innings without giving up a run, both team records. The former was a new pro yakyu record while the latter eclipsed hall of famer Masaaki Koyama.  Missed two weeks after hurting his neck while sleeping (8/2006). Tied a Japanese baseball record with 46 saves in 2007. First reliever ever to have three straight 100 strikeout seasons. During their ten game win streak, he pitched in all of them and went 2-0 with seven saves. Named to both of Japan's WBC teams (2006, 2009) and an olympic team (2008 at Peking). Went 16 straight scoreless appearances in 2010, but then hurt a leg down the stretch, hindering his command. 100th save (9/25/2008 against Yokohama Koshien Stadium).  500th appearance (8/28/2011 against Yakult at Koshien Stadium in a ninth inning relief appeearance). Selected to seven all star teams (2005-2011). Fastball has clocked as high as 96mph and also features one of the best forkballs on the planet while also having a good handle on the slider, changeup, curve and cutter.  Is married and has a son and daughter. Biography: Started out playing baseball in fourth grade. Was his high school team's ace. Drafted on the first round (2000). Came in with a lot of hype attached to him, but suffered elbow inflammatin during spring training of his rookie yearwhile working on a new delivery , causing him to be demoted to the minors after just two regular season appearances and wouldn't take the hill again for the Tigers until the last game of the schedule. He then incurred a pulled hamstring during spring training, 2002 and wasn't called up until July as a result. Had reconstructive elbow surgery in 2003 and missed the entire 2004 schedule. In 2007, switched to a sidearm delivery. Traded to Seibu in mid-July, 2009. Throws in the high 80's with a slider, forkball and a changeup. Reference:  Wikipedia Japan
