Biography: Introduced to baseball at the age of four by his father. Became a pitcher in eight grade. Pitched the first perfect game ever in Tochigi Prefecture high school history. Threw 12 no hitters in high school including three in a row and had a 145 inning scoreless streak. Played in two Koshien Tournaments (spring, summer 1973). Struckout 60 in four games in the spring tourney. In high school, he was 33-6 with 20 shutouts and an 0.46 ERA, striking out 531 in 354 innings. Drafted on the first round by Hankyu, but he refused that invitation and went to college. First freshman ever to be picked for a best nine team in Tokyo Big Six University League history. Also set league records with 17 career shutouts and is second all time in wins with 47. Had a career ERA of 1.16 at Hosei. Selected in the first round by Crown Lighter, but he turned that down and went to the U.S. and played semi-pro ball. Came back before the 1978 draft and signed with Yomiuri and then was drafted on the first round by Hanshin. After a lot of wrangling, the Giants sent pitcher Shigeru Kobayashi to Hanshin in what was billed as a trade for Egawa's rights. Even still, Egawa was suspended for two months. Set a Central League record for most walkless complete games in a season with ten (1982). Struckout eight men in a row in game three of the 1984 all star series.. Started having shoulder problems in 1985. Had 23 walkless complete games. Selected to eight all star teams (1980-1987). Became a baseball commentator after his retirement. Also ran his own business.  100th win (6/4/1985 against Hanshin at Koshien Stadium, the 88th man to that figure). 1000 strikeouts (9/9/1984 against Yakult at Korakuen Stadium, the 69th to that mark).
