| Biography: Submariner with a good fastball as well as a shuuto, curve and slider and threw inside a lot. Initially threw three quarters when he entered high school, but dropped down in imitation of a senior submariner on his squad and stuck with it. Played in one Koshien Tournament (summer 1951). Struckout 22 in a game against Tokyo University to set a record. Was reportedly subjected to workouts where his college head coach, Kichiro Shimaoka, made him throw up to 1000 pitches in a day. Yes, you did read that correctly. Went 33-18 for his collegiate career and lead Meiji to two national titles. Almost became a Yomiuri Giant, but he hurt his back his junior year and the Giants decided he was too much of an injury risk, so they passed and Taiyo got him. Had a no hitter with two outs in the eighth in his second pro appearance before Makoto Kozuru took him deep, causing him to absorb a 1-0 one hit loss. It was also the first dinger Akiyama gave up as a pro (3/25/1956 against Hiroshima in game one of a doubleheader). Won 25 of Taiyo's 43 games his rookie year. On On Opening Day of 1960, he was drilled in the head by an errant fungo during pre-game practice and had to be taken unconscious to hospital. He was also the scheduled starter (the opponent was Chunichi) and had to miss it. Taiyo lost six games in a row as a result before recovering to win their first ever pennant behind an MVP campaign from Akiyama. Won both ends of a doubleheader five times during his career, a record. One of those instances he nothced victories in both ends of a twin bill on 12th inning sayonara finishes (6/29/1960 against Yomiuri at Shimonoseki). Threw shutouts on consecutive days, the only man to do that since the beginning of the two league syetem (9/25-26/1962 against Hanshin), the only time that has been done in the two league era. Had six walkless complete games lifetime. 100th win (9/21/1960). 1500th strikeout (7/12/1962). His nine straight seasons right after turning pro of 50 or more appearances tied a pro yakyu record. Selected to nine all star teams (1956-1964). Became a baseball commentator for Kanagawa TV after retirement. Died of respiratory arrest. Reference: Wikipedia Japan |

| Biography: Started playing baseball in junior high. Went from catching to pitching in high school. Was 30-7 in college, though he did suffer a fracture his senior year and was selected to three Best Ninme teams after leading the Shikoku University League in wins three teams and ERA four times. Drafted on the tenth round (2001). He thus became the first player drafted out of his league to get to the pros. Released after the 2006 season and will join a team in the Shikoku Island League. His repetoire included a knuckle curve, a palm bal and a cicle change. Used exclusively in relief. His number, 48, is a tribute to a college teammate who wore that number and then died in an auto accident. That number is also retired at Shikoku Gakuin University as a result. |
